Sudden wheel skipping

I put about 2000 miles on the 2016 Sierra 1500 AllTerrain that I got recently (it is close to 40k miles right now). I never used it in any 4x4 more except for checking on the parking lot that the transfer case shifts in and out of all modes (and driving a few feet back/forth).

Today, when I was making a left U turn, I felt the front wheels skipping, as if 4WD was engaged. The dash did not show anything, and 2HI was constantly illuminated on the transfer case switch. At the very next turn, everything seemed normal and I pulled over to a parking lot shortly after to test full left/right turns and it was all good.

Is this a sign of a problem or something I should be worried about? Thanks a lot!

Oh, I was in 2HI all the time, that's why I am confused because for that one turn it felt like I was in 4HI. I drive in 2HI all the time, never went out of it except to test that the transfer case shifts in/out of all modes.

Welcome to the site.

What kind of conditions, wet/dry, did you possible drive over a painted surface on the road?

Do you have the upgraded DIC screen that you shows what mode (2WD, AWD, 4WD) you are in?

So you are confident it was in 2HI, but you felt the classic "crow hopping" of being in 4WD on dry pavement? That is strange and no reason the front wheels should skip if you are in 2HI.

It might have just been some wierd combo of the rear axle locking up while turning sharply or something. Were you aggressively accelerating?

If you feel it happen again while driving normally, take it to dealer.

Thank you all for your replies!

I am 100% sure the selector was in 2HI, and yes, it felt like skipping due to 4WD. The road was wet (drizzling rain) but not crazy slippery and I was not making the U turn aggressively, in fact, it was quite relaxed from a full stop.

Yes, I do have the DIC to show which mode I am in, but that was not currently on display, however, while this was happening, I quickly glanced at the transfer case selector to make sure I didn't accidentally switch out of 2HI.

It may have been the rear axle locking up - I am not experienced enough to say was it the front or rear wheels skipping.

Thanks again!

Your G80 was locked for whatever reason.

My 2001Silverado has one and it never gave me any trouble in 19yrs of beating..... I mean driving it other than to sometimes not unlock right away.

Usually backing up while turning will unlock it if it gets real stuck, but for me that was rare.

Good to know, thanks!

You might also want to check to see if the front axle has remained locked.  Reach under the truck and try to rotate the front driveshaft (between the transfer case and the front differential), you should be able to rotate it freely.

I think you're right since he can't really say if it was front or rear and said it was wet. Doesn't take much in the road to set it off in a turn.

I've never had that occur and I've driven it more aggressive in the same kind of weather. Will check the front drive shaft tomorrow - going to lift the bed to repair the frame rust.

Thanks to all!

You will know when Stabilitrac kicks in, the more gas you give it, the slower you will go.

It retards (removes timing) from your engine to slow down wheel spin, you should find somewhere to experiment with it. If you live somewhere with snow in the winter, you will grow to hate it.

My 04 would do similar if I was an asshat and would spin the tires in reverse. After that it took getting up above 25 to make the truck happy again and stop skipping. However, I believe my skipping was coming from the rear in this case.
