Valve cleaners

Before you spend your hard earned money on valve cleaners/carbon removers, consider what I tried today.

I sprayed an entire can of CRC directly on the valve. Then I let the valve soak in CRC intake and engine cleaner for four hours (agitating the valve back and forth every half hour). Then I took the valve out, heated it with a propane torch and let the heat sink in. Then I placed the valve back in the solution for another hour. I finally took that valve out for one more direct spray.

Very little carbon came off that valve. Direct spraying of two cans of CRC. A four hour soak. Heating of the valve face. Almost nothing was removed. Don’t waste your time...walnut blast these things if you want results.

Even worse than having no cleaning effect it actually looks like the solution has bent the valve [emoji1787]

It's all that damn carbon buildup!

I sometimes wonder...is carbon capable of hiding under my bed and biting my toes? It's why I jump 15 feet off the bed in the morning...never can be too safe:)

I’ll continue with my routine valve cleanings every oil change. Your little experiment proves nothing. The key is to do these cleanings from the get go, not 50, 75 or 100k miles in. This stuff isn’t going to magically clean valves that are already coked up. Everybody knows that. It’s meant to be a preventative measure.

thanks for the good laugh. I needed it. I had a crappy day at work.

You're welcome, keep wasting your money...I hear it helps with crappy days at work. Cheers.

It wasn't that much, it was on sale in the "snake oil" section, its right next to the "we have a good deal on some swamp land in Florida" aisle. Haha.

I do the same. CRC before every oil change and I run a catch can.

My valves are clean.

Yeah, not at all like how it is actually being utilized in the engine. When used properly the speed of the air along with the chemical properties of the solution are designed to erode away the build up. 2-3k rpm air is moving very quickly over the valve. I am sure it helps, better than nothing though honestly these engines probably don't really even need it, though I will do it once a year or so just for safe measure. Either way it was a formidable attempt but missing some key elements on what actually cleans the valves...

Warm up engine, spray valves at 2k rpm, rev engine, let soak then send it on the highway italian style; boom, done.

Yes, you have some good points. I considered the air moving past the valves and the up and down movement of the valves (which I didn't do). I figured I made up for that by spraying two entire cans on the valves and letting it sit in a solution for four hours. I also heated up the valve with a torch, before putting it back in the solution for another hour. Then finished it off with another direct blast of spray. But engine operation is different - honestly I thought by spraying two entire cans directly on the valve, more than made up for the loss of air turbulence (but I'm not sure). And I definitely got the valve plenty hot...I was a bit worried about flash igniting the solution. And I understand this valve was pretty coked with carbon to begin with.

I'd like to learn how to do that on my oil changes. My truck only has 2000 miles. I installed a Range AFM disabler and a catch can the week I bought the truck. Any good videos that show how to properly do the cleaning? I don't want to screw anything up.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
