2021 Sierra Frame wax gone

I wanted to post a picture of what has happened to my frame. It’s on the passenger side behind the tire. The coating is gone right to the bare frame. I put a coating of PB Blaster Surface Shield over everything under the truck about a month ago for an undercoating. This is the only area of the frame where this happened. 

My first question is do you think the undercoating did something to the frame wax?

Second does undercoating the frame and under carriage void the warranty? 
Third…. Am I screwed? Is this going to happen over the entire frame?

has anyone seen this before?

Well... You're not supposed to undercoat a waxed frame unless you completely strip and paint it.  Any kind of petroleum based product will soften and remove the coating.  GM does have recommended repair procedures.

Thanks for the reply. It doesn’t say it’s petroleum based anywhere on the can. It says it’s lanolin based. I would have never used it if it is petroleum based. It also doesn’t say on the can not use on a waxed frame or specify not to use on GM frame. If it makes the wax deteriorate in anyway one would think they would have it on the can.

The PB Blaster did that.  Stuff like that and Fluid Film eat the coating and deteriorates the crap out of it.  If you've already sprayed the rest of the frame, the rest of the wax stands a chance of doing the same exact thing.  

 

The only thing that you really should put on to reinforce the wax, is the same product.  Dauber Nox Rust 121B which is the wax GM uses.  

 

You can put the PB on all the sheetmetal if you want all day long so inside the box, under the box floor, the rockers, floorboards, etc., just not on the frame.

Also, the stuff you used does contain petroleum.

 

Here is the Safety Data Sheet right from PB's website:

 

Aerosol - MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (blasterproducts.com)   First main ingredient that's not an aerosol additive/gas?  Petrolatum (petroleum jelly).  Note the low Lanolin and wool wax content.  

 

Gallon pail - MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (blasterproducts.com)    First ingredient?  Petroleum jelly at 45-70% of the chemical makeup of it.  Lanolin and wool wax make up only 10-20% of it.

Thanks newdude. I guess I have to order some of that wax to fix it. They should really put it on the can that is petroleum based and don’t use on was coated frames.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix the problem I have now since this is all over my frame?

should I spray the wax back over it? Or will that make it worse?

I would keep crawling underneath and checking every once in a while to see if more wax is falling off.  Respray the wax on the parts that wax has fallen off.

 

I would also avoid pressure washing the undercarriage.  You'll blast the wax right off.

I would actually think a light pressure washing would help remove the stuff that has already failed. Anything that’s wrinkled like the wax near the peeled off area should wash right off and then re-apply. Leaving that crinkled up stuff on there is only going to give a nice place for salt to sneak in behind, IMO. Either way it’s gonna take some doing at this point…

Possibly a degreaser that doesn't have petroleum in it to remove the PB blaster? with an hose to rinse off the degreaser and PB blaster and then dry with air and re-wax what is needed?

 

At this point,  the warranty is probably gone on the frame.

I agree with this.  For me, I'd start fresh.  ie, remove as much wax/PB as possible and put on a new coating of wax or fluid film

I use this stuff.  Pound it on thick with a schutz gun - completely satisfied with its performance through the winter & doesn't hurt the frame wax from my experience.  Not cheap, but neither was my truck.

Fluid Film will do the same to the wax.

If you are in New Hampshire like your name says, why not just go to "NHOU Undercoatings"?

      I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.

      Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.

      Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,

      Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
