Well for those of you who recognize my name you know my 2020 trailboss was a lemon due to exhaust and transmission issues. Got a nice pay out after I traded it in for a brand new 2021 sierra 1500.

Well here we are with more issues (FML life). Trucks a 6 month old bought in June new 2021 Sierra 1500 3.0 duramax.

So about a month into owning the truck (middle of summer) i went to start the truck, foot on brake, push the button and to my bewildement the truck just sat there cranking trying to turn over. Couldn't get it to stop either till it seemed like its 30 second cycle stopped. Thought that was weird. Fast forward to now. It has happened probably 5 or 6 times in the last 6 months in various times.

But in the last 2 or 3 weeks its happened twice. So its getting more frequent. I was able to capture a video this time

Im going to take it in for a checkup after Christmas but we all know theyll just say "there is no codes its working as desired".

But i know i need to start the paper trail.

I also about 2 weeks into owning the truck had smoke billowing out of the oil cap. I did get that checked out and they said it was fine and "normal" i need to look myself again though before i take it in and if its still happening ill have them service that too.

Has anyone had either of these issues?

Im beginning to think im a bit cursed.

This happened to me once with my 2021 6.2.  I disconnected the negative battery terminal for about 10 seconds, reconnected it and made sure the positive was tight and it fired right up.  Have had no problems since.  If you google Silverado crank but no start, you'll also see something about tightening the bolts that hold the under-hood fuse block down.  It seems some of these were loose and caused the issue also.  Good luck!

Lots of threads about crank / no-start.

Bottom line is the fix is an update that was released in October.

You will find threads that said update didn't fix it -- but it turns out they were 'reflashed' prior to release of the no-start update.

They did find mechanical issues on some earlier trucks; thought they were the cause; but they were not.  (Intermittent issues are always nasty to eliminate)

You are correct that the crank timing out. Crank stops when computer decides it's time.

Most everyone reports that they always start on the 2nd try.

When you push/release the button, it sends a signal to computer, which takes over the start duties. Just like if the remote had been used.

There is no need to 'hold the button' for it to start -  ever.

Not all trucks do it.

16,000 miles and 14 months and mine hasn't missed a start.   (hasn't been in since the update released)

When the dealer runs your vin it will show that the update is required.

Have your dealer pull up PIP5823B Intermittent Extended Crank No Start.

Also there is this:   Damaged Camshaft Position Sensor Exciter Wheel – TechLink (gm-techlink.com)

This one has PIP5822B: MIL Illuminated with DTC P0341 Set associated with it, not the PIP5806 in there.  If you don't see the CEL on, this one probably won't apply and PIP5823B stands a strong chance of fixing the extended crank.

If they are smart, they will do PIP5822B first and investigate the exciter wheel before they go and do the reprogram in PIP5823B to make sure that the wheel is good and to prevent you from having to go back yet again for the same issue.

Here is the  number but im sure its been updated by now.   #PIP5823B    attached.   Have the reflash first . then if that did not wok worry about the reluctor wheel, I have not seen the reflash not work for anyone yet?
