If we go by what virgin oxidations show, Red Line followed by Amsoil SS have the highest values.

There are so many esters its hard to know which ones they are using.  I've seen rumors suggesting Amsoil uses proprietary esters from Croda.  I have no way of proving so who knows.

@customboss could have some fun with that :)

See that lack of a ragged top but two peaks (3,000 cm-1)? I have an idea but I'm not the FTIR master.

A comparison of Mobil 1 0w-40 oils.  Notice the 0w40 SP FS has an oxidation value of 8.7.  The others are upper 30's.

Also, note the before and after shear stability (Viscosity @ 100C).  The ESP X3, C40 GT are more shear stable than FS 0w40 and Supercar 0w40.  However, three of them have some type of group v while the FS 0w40 does not.

The Mobil 1 0w40's with ester look like great oils.

Guy had 117k on 17 V6 Colorado.  Started consuming oil between oil changes after running Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum all its life.  Switched to Valvoline Restore and Protect and it stopped.  I can't speak on the Mobil 1 Triple Action as that is a new formulation, but some of the Extended Performance oils from the prior version didn't have the solvency to keep piston rings as clean as I would have expected.  Valvoline Restore continues to impress.

Had this guy used Red Line, Amsoil SS, HPL, the piston rings would have arguably better in better shape.  I'm speculating of course.  HPL is touted as having the most solvency of any synthetic.  No idea if true.  It's loaded with a lot of additives though.

FWIW, HPL uses diester (adipate) and not POE.

Explains the cleaning effect.  NEO was majority diester not sure they are still in business.

2024 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.2 liter triple

26,073 miles on unit

3,573 OCI (3,750 nominal target) Pulled sample early due to long lead times. :(

Lab Oil Analyzers (AMSOIL) Thank you Nick for all you do for me.

Red Line HP Euro Series 5W40 + 2 oz of Red Line ZDDP additive. Boosted to SH levels. 1200 ppm minimum.

Dropped water temperature 10 F with Stant Superstat this OCI.

Had an event this OCI. Punctured radiator and temp spike. Seems this brew did it's job.

Iron and aluminum only wear metals to show up and continuing to decline. Both under 1 ppm/K miles. Total just over 1 ppm.

Nitration and oxidation nil. 2 abs units over VOA

Viscosity at 1.3% shear.

TBN, plenty left, 74% of VOA. Hovering 5 mg KOH/gr

Oil color is awesome. Still light amber

This oil is not stressed but I will hold this OCI length until wear bottoms out.  Still in data mode.

Silicon is the only concern and until I can find a better filter, tis what it is. Doesn't seem to be bothering the power cylinder.

This next OCI is the last of the original batch number.

Best part of the sample was  @Black02Silverado. First pass on this sample broke trends and created doubt. Contacted Nick and told him the issues I had. He listened patiently then advised me on my options and how to exercise them.  I contacted the lab. Explained my concerns and how I track results. Customer service saw the issue plainly. We had a nice discussion and then the ICP was rerun with a more believable result. People make mistakes. People find fixes for mistakes. There are NO perfect people nor perfect labs.

Seems we have bottomed out and leveled off.

Next sample is scheduled for a 5,000 mile run.

Aluminum is the real winner in this grand experiment.

Mitigating skirt scuffing was the intent and seems to be the result.

Marked improvement over either 5W30 or 0W20.

Minimal improvement in Iron 5W40 V 5W30 but notable over 0W20

Total wear reduction is almost entirely the result of low Aluminum.

And yes, some minor contribution from bearing wear reduction.

    • Not sure about DFM tech but i know there's a stop/start deactivation button.
    • I could be interested if they axed cylinder deactivation and at least have a button for stop start. I’m sure the HP numbers will be higher. I would want a longer warranty to help build confidence. I’m a less is more guy as I get older. A V-8 work truck model would be my choice. I know a few outfitters for custom additions I prefer.
    • It's official. GMC pulled the covers off the next-gen 2027 Sierra 1500, and we got the first official look. Full breakdown here: https://www.gm-trucks.com/next-gen-2027-gmc-sierra-1500-v8-trim-changes/   The quick hits: SLE and SLT are dead. The new core retail trim is just called "Elevation". Two new V8s, a 5.7L and a 6.6L built with high-performance Corvette architecture roots. No horsepower or torque numbers yet. The 2.7 TurboMax finally ditches the old gearbox and gets the 10-speed automatic. AT4X moves to larger standard 35-inch tires with front and rear e-lockers, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and heavy-duty Jounce Control Dampers. Over 60 inches of combined display on Denali Ultimate and AT4X, complete with a motorized articulating center screen and an adaptive passenger screen. Seven simplified trims across the entire model line to clean up ordering confusion.   So let's get into it: New 5.7L and 6.6L gas V8s with custom active exhaust tuning and a Corvette connection. Is this the exact engine lineup half-ton traditionalists have been begging for? Purging the iconic SLE and SLT names after all these years to lean entirely on Elevation as the high-volume core. Bold move, or a mistake? That motorized articulating 16.3-inch screen that slides up to reveal a hidden dashboard vault. Awesome mechanical theater, or does it make you nervous about long-term durability? Physically lowering the headlamps in the front fascia to improve road courtesy and stop blinding oncoming traffic. Smart real-world engineering, or does it hurt the truck's aggressive stance? What trim are you putting your name down for on day one? Drop your first impressions below.
    • My overnight hospital stay turned into five.  I developed a post operative fever and an erratic  heart rate.  A blood clot in the lungs was the culprit.  This is apparently a common post surgical complication and easily remedied.   I was the youngest in a four bed ward and a Doctor with a Geriatric specialization was in charge of my care.  All of the nurses were good and some were outstanding at dealing with old people.  It was very evident that my age triggered a different level of care!  My advice to any senior going for a hospital stay is to have a trusted family member advocate visible.  If not, you will still be well cared for, but you may discover that your voice  isn't as strong as it once was!
