Did some more light towing with my truck this weekend again and found that I can pull my two place clamshell snowmobile trailer in 6th gear without much fuss at all, at 75 mph and getting 12.5-13 mpg. Granted, the whole setup might only weigh 2200ish lbs rolling down the road but the trailer cap turns this thing into a huge windblock when you're rolling down the highway. Plus, northern lower Michigan is no slouch for decent grades and hilly terrain so although it did downshift to 5th a couple of times, the trans temp never scowered over 125 degrees the whole pull (100 ish miles one way).

 

Again, very impressive seeing as how a friend of mine pulled a very similar trailer for a while (until he upgraded to bigger), with his '08 HD 6l and had to leave the 6 speed in 5th gear and got no better than 9 mpg rolling the same speed.

 

Same goes for how my '98 use to pull this same trailer. While I would never think of trying to pull this trailer in 4th gear in the truck, it would pull it without issue or downshift, in 3rd gear all day long however, at that speed and engine rpm, 10 mpg was the best you were getting, period. 9, if you were bucking a headwind the whole way.

 

Just more reason to love my purchase more and more. :cheers:

I read somewhere ( which I can't remeber where)that new gen. 6.2 is going to 425hp.

 

Would be nice to figure out how GM is getting the extra power if it is true. eg. Cam, heads. injectors, computer mod,etc...

I wonder if it is just a tuning thing. We could get a flash on our trucks to get the benefit!!

I'm reading through the thread for info. as I just picked up a leftover '11 Chevy that is nearly 2010LTZ4x4's twin. I was looking for a GMC max trailering 1500 to replace my 07 Vmax but ended up with a Z60 suspension 6.2 CC Chevy.

 

I have an NHT/Max trailering question. What exactly comes with this package over the normal trailering package? I know gear ratio is one item as mine has 3.42's and NHT's have 3.73's. Also mine has 20 inch wheels which is a no-go on NHT's AFAIK. I keep reading about spring rates, anyone know the different rates or have any other info? I'll be pulling an open car trailer a lot and a 24ft. enclosed car trailer very seldom. If I pulled it more often I'd have a 2500HD but love the way the 1500's ride compared to the HD's when unloaded.

On a side note, drove 400 miles roundtrip this weekend, on the way there got 18.8 according to DIC driving 69 with a decent tail wind. On the way back got 15 driving around 70 with no wind. The way back is slightly uphill over the 200 miles. These things are still trucks for sure! Had a couple full throttle runs on the way back that put a smile on my face :D

yep NHT 3.73 14 bolt,where did you find info about wider springs than non NHT? have info a link?

The non-NHT trucks also have the 14 bolt rear end

Sure, there are differences between the NHT and Non-NHT rear leaf springs, this we all know. It is not that the NHT springs are wider, they are the same width, from what I've measured. I see that the Hybrid Silverado/Sierra's are also listed as taking the same springs as the NHT trucks so while there is no available spring rate information, I'd have to say that the increase is marginal, over the Non-NHT springs, at best. Believe it or not, most of the extra 1,000 in towing capacity probably comes from the gear ratio increase. That happens all the time.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
