Nothing wrong with a little power smoke, what's stupid is people with dirty tunes that drive around in 4th gear in town to make smoke on purpose. That being said, the new diesels probably run as clean as a gasser.

I'm not sure what "rolling coal" means, but if it concerns folks tuning their diesel trucks rich, and blowing unburned diesel out the stack... then yeah, that's dumb. I can't stand getting behind one of those, and have probably said a few choice words...

Besides the better gas mileage, aren't diesels actually less polluting? As in, they put out fewer overall emissions per unit of power produced?

this is my theory behind the RAM 1500 diesel: its for those who want the torque and fuel efficiency of a diesel, but not the size, weight, and cost of a Heavy Duty Cummins powered Ram. essentially, this is catering to frugal minded Fleet users.

I would have bought a 1/2 ton diesel as I do not need a 3/4 ton for what I use my truck for. I tow a 7500# trailer about 500-1000 miles a year on a couple different trips, I wanted a diesel cause the 5.3L was killing me on the fuel and really didn't have the torque I wanted. That being said I bought a 3/4 ton cummins and I love it, but I would have bought the 1/2 ton in the blink of an eye instead seeing as the 3/4 ton is more than I need.. There are plenty of guys that like me that will be interested in these trucks. The reason the 1/2 ton gm diesels didn't work out was because they had the worst diesel ever put in a truck, the 6.5L and before that the 6.2L, I would rather have a 6.0L powerjoke. If gm put the durmax in the 1/2 tons in 2001 when they came out with them, they would have sold.

Except it won't be frugal. I figure the upgrade will be at least $2000-$3000 if not more then you're faced with fuel that costs more per gallon than premium in many places and then you have the added maintenance expenses. It might work if you run trucks into the ground but most large fleets don't keep trucks that long. Who knows for sure though. I'm probably overly skeptical because fuel efficiency is not something I care about in any way whatsoever. As long as it has an acceptable highway range, the efficiency isn't of great importance so unless the diesel was a real hot rod, I'd skip it.

The price here in south jersey is +/- $.10 diesel to premium, but when you tow, a gas engine will suck down fuel like no ones business. The diesel will see minimal difference, if you avg. 15 you would see 12 maybe 10 towing. I got 7.5-8.5 in my '10 Sierra w/ 5.3L. Obviously you like the 6.2L, I was gonna get one but when I added up the cost vs the diesel it was minimal, then when you added in the fact it is far less capable compared to a 3/4 ton it was a no brainer. I walked otd with my Ram for $46,000, about $6,000 more than a 1/2 ton with the 6.2L similarly equipped. The new ram 1500 has air ride suspension on all 4 corners, I would expect this to carry more weight than the coil springs. I think for the vast majority of the market they will feel the way you do, but there are a lot of people that drive a lot of mile and use there trucks for hauling and towing occasionally, so this is a nice mix of the 3/4 ton world and the 1/2 ton world.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
