"Check Engine Oil Level"

I keep getting this on the readout on my truck, but the oil is in the center of the crosshatch on the dipstick. What else could cause the truck to think its low on oil?

It only comes on at startup, and goes off after a second or two.

 

I guess thats something you have to get inside to check, or is there any way that I could check it myself?

its fine...it went out,,,,cant fix whats not broke imo

You better take a look at it. I know this is extremely rare but I had a 3800 Chevy when I was a tech that had that sensor break off in the pan and get beaten to pieces by the crank. The pieces got sucked into the oil pump pickup and destroyed the oil pump and then it spun 2 rod bearings due to lack of oil pressure. Just take the sensor out and make sure it isn't cracked or anything. Like I said, I know that is extremely rare but better safe than sorry. I wish I had taken pictures of it when I pulled the pan off. It was definitely a first for me.

Where is it located?

It goes in the side of the pan. I believe it's on the passenger side about half way back. All you will see is a BIG plastic hex (34mm?) with a 2-wire electrical connector coming out of it.

Do the GMT900 trucks (07 NBS--2013 1500's) display this warning message?

 

Just curious, as I've seen low oil levels on the dipstick of my '09, but never ever any warning message of any kind.

It does when the oil level get's below the dip stick. I got the warning and freaked out, added a quart of oil, and life was good again.

Yeah the 900s have it too. Not sure how low the oil has to be to make it go on.

I was down 2 to 3 quarts in my 2009 and the low warning never came on.

Oh there is, in fact I can't find the thread but there is one member here who claims he waits until that light comes on, then that is when he adds oil.
