SouthernSilveradoGuy85 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I don't want to need "helper" steps to get in and out of the truck, that was why its listed under my annoyances but its not as big a deal as not being able to load and unload stuff over the side rails. as to mpg, my 98 1500 with the 350 and 3.73 gears even after 120,000 miles got 18 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the highway if I drive right and I checked it at the pump with every fill up so I know that was accurate but my brand new 2014 gets 16.3 mpg city and 18.4 mpg (at best) on highway and that sucks for a 2014 truck with all the advanced tech they have in this thing. and as for driving style, you can tell the way I drive by the mileages I got with the 98, I drive like a grampa with no where to go and in no hurry to get anywhere so the average would be worse if I drove "normally" as others do. by the way, the crew cabs with 18" tires and rims I drove while mine was in the shop were much better and averaged 19 mpg city and 21 highway so I don't know why my regular cab with 17" tires and rims does so poorly but it does the lack of storage I was referring to was just inside the glove box and the extra box above it that's only good for sunglasses or a book also I need to add to the list, the drink holders that drain into the console storage box when something is spilled in it is a really bad idea and the guy who designed it should be fired Like I said I don't know how you got so good of miles out of your 98 with the 3.73 gears. As mine was the same the only performance I did was exhaust and a K&N air intake kit. The mileage on it when I got rid of it was just over 147,000 I believe and the engine actually had 20,000 less miles on it. As for the mileage on your '14 look up the gear ratio. Mine's 3.08 which I hate, but keeps the RPMs low on the interstate. Your's my also have the 3.73 since it's a work truck. About the storage, I thought you were also talking about the rest of the truck. But ya, the smaller storage space above the glove box is small, well should say not that deep. But, I still find it useful for smaller things. The steps probably still wouldn't be a bad idea since you have a 4" lift. It's not a huge lift I know, but even my stock height '14, the steps are used by other people just to get into the cab of the truck. Pay a little extra for bed access steps and it helps you reach into the bed.
jonny24 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Not a whole lot I can think of. -I wish there was a manual release on the power drivers seat, so I could move it forward to put stuff there without messing up my seat placement (regular cab problems!) -Gas mileage isn't quite as good as I like, lifetime is 13.1 L/100 (18 mpg) and that's 90 percent paved country roads. The one time I was in the actual city and not just into town is got over 15 (15.5 mpg) -Wish I could set the radio to the clock screen while it's still on. -The speedo needle doesn't read quite the same as the digital readout, and is slower to react to changes in speed.
keakar Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Like I said I don't know how you got so good of miles out of your 98 with the 3.73 gears. I had the k&n filter too but kept stock exhaust but I really baby it so I stayed off the gas most of the time my 2014 is the 5.3L with the 3.08 gears and the towing package so I have that locking rear end thing but that shouldn't matter but I do have the vibration issues so maybe its related to that somehow

Had it on the 98 and have it on my'14. I also have a toolbox with a bunch of tools and stuff in it so I know that lowers my mileage a little. So really I don't know why your highway miles are that low. The city mileage looks around normal. I'm still trying to figure out how you had that good of mileage on your 98. I know you babied it and I didn't, but I still don't remember anybody with that platform (GMT-400) getting that high of mileage. Not saying I think you're lying, just can't figure out how lol.

Any time you lift a truck, you can expect the mileage to go down. What size tires are you running (tire size, not rim size, as rim size doesn't really make much of a difference, it's the tire size).
nikon2003 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 My truck as a whole isn't bad, definitely the quietest truck I've owned (5 gmc) - The transmission is extremely undecided, between that and v4/v8 mode way to much going on. End up driving in m5 to avoid this - Rattling center console, rattle in passenger door area and squeak from drivers door (I HATE NOISES!) - The motor feels slower than my 2011 6.2l, probably just exhaust note, but it just doesn't seem to have the same grunt - Miss the rumble of my 2011 6.2l exhaust, this truck is quiet - My MPG is about 1-2mpg better than old truck, love that. Plus defrost/sliding rear is a bonus now that fall is here
KARNUT Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 After 9 months and 9k miles the only thing I like better on the older trucks was the seats. Not deal breakers but the old ones where better.
nards444 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Number one pet peeve is the sunglass holder on the head liner, must have had old men in mine, because its not fitting anything more than reading glasses. 2. Key Fob looks to be from the dollar store, cheap, doesnt even have an emblem on it. 2. The whole infotainment system is querky and slow to respond, and its inputs to get to things are backwards. I see no reason why the head unit should control the heat and and ac,
stevev Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 also, if you don't have the trailer brake controller, what's up with the tiny cubby hole they give you in that spot in the dash? What can you even fit in there, it's so small?
redaddiction Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Interior Lights are useless. Cup Holders that leak into storage No drain holes in the front of the bed My link that makes me dismiss every warning instead of automatically going away Damn near impossible to squeeze a baby car seat in the back of the extended cab/ the back door should of wider Oh and bed light can't be on while driving
MikeNH Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 also, if you don't have the trailer brake controller, what's up with the tiny cubby hole they give you in that spot in the dash? What can you even fit in there, it's so small? I haven't sat in a pickup yet but my 2003 had a similarly odd-dimensioned cubby where the 4WD buttons would go (I had the manual T case) I used it to hold my wallet if I knew I'd be visiting an ATM or whatever.

What size tires are you running (tire size, not rim size, as rim size doesn't really make much of a difference, it's the tire size). no, I DONT have a 4" lift, my truck is 100% factory. im talking about chevy building these trucks sitting 4" higher off the ground they they always did before 2006 so with these new trucks you need assist steps to comfortably get into them on a stock factory truck
keakar Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 also, if you don't have the trailer brake controller, what's up with the tiny cubby hole they give you in that spot in the dash? What can you even fit in there, it's so small? set of keys to something maybe, that's what I do. (lawn mower shed / boat keys) I would love the option if there was a smooth finish filler plug I could put in there instead oh, and one more complaint: seats that don't fold forward (I have regular cab) so the seat must be moved all the way forward to get behind it and it still doesn't allow enough room to see stuff back there very well not to mention there is no thought given to putting things behind the seat. a nice tray for holding stuff back there would have been nice

Jake56 Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I buy a big truck and many things on it are small !!! Work truck basic options should still have manly size features. Examples: 1) cruise control buttons on steering wheel , smallest I have seen on any vehicle , icons are barely readable. 2) Clock and temperature readout is very small font 3) Blindspot mirror (driver side) is very small and actually should have on both mirrors. 4) Mirrors are small for a truck 5) Windshield wiper switch and labels ...small other dissappointments include no light to show 4cyl versus 8 cyl mode But great looking truck and like the engine
