Putco XM-L2 or Nite-Lux LED Conversion

I was wondering if anyone has tried the Putco XM-L2 or Nite-Lux LED headlamp conversion on a 2014 Sierra.

 

According to Putco, the XM-L2 puts out 2000 lumens, and the Nite-Lux is 2500 lumens. I think this could be a boost, the Nite-Lux especially, to the poor headlamp design of the 2014 Sierra. But was curious if anyone had any experience with them.

Not sure if you've seen either of these but they are both threads dedicated to LED headlights. One is for just VLEDs (mainly the LMZs) and the other is for halogen and LED upgrades for the headlights.

I personally have the LMZs in my headlights and they are great. Definitely compare to a 55W HID (had 55W HIDs for 6 months until they failed).

 

If you really want to maximize improvement, you'll want to do a full projector retrofit with either an FXR, RX-350, or other projector. A real projector and not these things that GM put in

What's the price on those? I'm too lazy to look them up as I'm in the same boat as mike1220 with the LMZ's installed. Just curious as to how they compare performance and price-wise.

I didn't look to see if you already posted in the halogen and LED headlight upgrade thread, if you haven't, I would post in there to see if anyone has tried them but maybe didn't mention.

 

As for the retrofit, I finally found a local shop that is willing to do retrofits so it looks like once I get a quote from them for all the work I'm getting done, I'll have to get the D2S collar for the LMZs and see how they perform against HIDs in an FXR housing.

Just put in a set of the night lux in the low projectors on Friday. I liked them enough to order two more sets for the highs and fogs the next day. The color is a nice white light and bright enough were I haven't been using the fogs to fill in like I have been.

As far as installation, it took a little pressure to get the cap on with the new bulb but i was able to do it with out any modification. also I took the headlights off the truck I don't think I would have been able to get the caps maneuvered in place on the truck.

You may need some new caps from Jon A. He makes extended caps so that LED bulbs aren't squashed under the factory cap

 

Do you have any picture of the beam pattern?

Those look great. Did you use the 9005 or the 9006?

 

And SkeeterMcSkeet, they are about $180 for a set of the Nite-Lux. About $160 for the XM-L2

nope they are H11 bulbs.

Hey everyone, here is a response I got from Putco regarding the Nite-Lux LED conversion. Seems they are looking to roll out a specific 9012 version.

Thank you for contacting us, according to one of our engineers the 279006
( 9006 ) bulb type will cross-reference to a 9012 and will fit into the housing, but we are looking to get an actual 9012 bulb type in the near future… If you have any other questions please let me know.

I wonder how those would work on the Sierra projector headlights after the BCM is flashed with the newer update that increase the voltage to the headlights?

i just ordered a set of hi and low beam Nite-lux for my 08 Silverado.Only reason for doing so was because I have been eating silverstar headlights. Our roads are so cratered up that the shock must be doing them in. They should be in tomorrow and i will put them in. The high beams I have not needed to replace but I thought I may as well just do them all.

    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
