I had a fairly minor rock dent/scratch in my hood. No parts, just body + paint was $1100.

$8k is funny. I got rear ended in my 2015 All Terrain with 4K miles on the odo. Dented the bumper and bent a bumper bracket. No frame damage and it didn't even hit the bed. Just to replace the bumper (had to be painted too since they ship the bumpers unpainted) the total bill was almost $2k.

I know a GM rear bumper for my 2011 was over $900. It's crazy!

I went through a similar situation with the wife's car. A guy hauling an empty mobile home full length trailer forgot he was pulling it around and took his corner to short at a stop and go light and smashed up the left front fender and caused frame damage as well. Needless to say my inexperience with the situation had it fixed through the at fault parties insurance and didn't get my insurance involved at all because I didn't want my rates to skyrocket . Come to find out a couple years later when we thought about trading up no dealer wanted it on their lot because car fax lists the frame damage on the vin report. After talking to several body shop guys. Several of them were shocked that because of it being only one model year old that it didn't get totaled. The only thing I can think of is because I didn't pursue the situation through my insurance first who I am the customer for. Obviously the insurance paying for the damage wanted to pay the least amount of money.

So my suggestion is to get your insurance involved. And don't take "cheapest fix" as the only option. It might take a little longer. But explain the fact that any resale on the vehicle just took an instant $5-8k (only guessing) hit because of the car fax reporting (if there is frame damage). Something you shouldn't have to deal with since the accident wasn't your fault. That's what u pay "insurance" for!!!

I think who ever told you 50 mph was a wee bit high. Doesn't look like any side air bag deployment (at 50 there would be), and looking at the doors and cab I would say 30 mph give or take.

As far as totaled, I am going to say no. For those who say they would't accept anything but a new truck, sometimes you have no choice depending on your insurance. You can always take them to court but if you want a new truck the best bet is to have it repaired, get a check for diminished value then trade it in or sell it. That will cover all the difference. Some insurances are better than others, but they aren't in the business to give away new vehicles everytime one is totaled that is recently new.

Hope it works out OP, that really sucks but sometimes sh*t happens. Glad no one was seriously injured (including the old lady), hope it all works well for you. Keep us up to date.

I am guessing the F-150 wouldn't even have a ding in it as the aluminum is not paper thin like these trucks, the aluminum is getting ready to get even thinner and MUCH stronger at the same time. I don't hear Ford guys complaining like we do about denting their trucks when they are hand washing them...

HAHAHA you bet bud

Exactly. And as far as 'diminished value' goes, good luck with your insurance company on that.

To the OP I feel your pain. I just got my 3 month old truck back on Friday from being repaired. I was rear ended with 1700 miles on it. Around 15k worth of damage. They straightened the frame and replaced the bed and tailgate. It wasn't even close to being totaled. My advice is to be diligent and don't accept anything from their or your insurance companies without scrutiny. Good luck.

Wow.....what a nightmare for a brand spankin new truck that's not even broke in yet.

I would be pissed, especially about the frame damage, as it's presence on Carfax report will diminish the value and make it less desireable at the time of resale. Non-frame damage accidents are bad enough. Fight like hell to get a total loss and new truck. If you cannot, then make sure they replace the frame with a factory new one, and get paperwork showing that it was replaced.

question for those who experience these sort of things (accidents with substantial repairs).

Say the insurance company doesn't total it and some shot repairs it. Is that the end of it for what you can claim? For instance, say 3 months later you find that the thing now leaks and you are getting water in the interior - do you still have recourse to get it fixed?

Also - for this case with the original poster. He just took possession of it, so does GM still honor the warranty if something else goes out on it or would you be screwed trying to fight the repair show and GM to repair it?

Stay far away from dealership repair, and use an independant. That way, your carfax remains clean.

I'm pretty sure if it goes through an insurance company, it will end up on CarFax.

That and a lot of times independent auto-body shops do better quality work than dealerships. My brother has been in the auto-body business for 28 years. I have helped him more times than I can count. In a lot of dealerships the body men they hire are green and therefore they can keep their pay rates lower. A lot of body men use dealerships to start their careers and then go to the independent shops to make more money.

No way that's only $8k in damage, even for a preliminary estimate, I think that number is far too low.

Over the summer I was hit similarly, but at a much lower speed. I was hit on the passenger side, in between the cab and the bed. Had a new rear cab door, new cab corner, new bedside, paint etc. that was $7k to repair bill. And there was no frame damage.

I would say once a body shop start tearing in to that that thing they will realize its a LOT more damage. Especially with with eh frame damage.

And also, as everyone is saying, there is no way in hell I would be accepting that back, even if they did fix it. Brand spanking new, they should replace the thing outright.
