Welcome to the forum and good luck with your purchase. You can't go wrong with either. If you can find one try out a Denali with the 6.2 engine. Big power difference over the 5.3. You'll find the power equal to that of the ecoboost. Either way they're both nice trucks.

 

The 6.2 seems to be a unicorn, but eventually I'll try to get some seat time in one.

Nobody is butthurt, It's called netiquette my friend and trolling. This is a GM site where people come to talk about the GM trucks they own period dot. If you want to talk about Fords, go to the Ford forums, if you want to talk about Nissan's go to the Nissan forum etc. it's not that hard to understand. If people were like "Hey, my GM didn't eork for me, i traded it in in a Ford if you want opinions PM me" that's cool, but instead we get ding dings who choose to come here and talk down the GM and how the new make is much better. Also we get a lot of opinions from people who don't even own a GM 2014+. If you want to debate the capabilities of each truck, there's a forum for that in pickuptrucks.com and that place by no means is civil, this place has in a ways morphed into that place with all these tsour grapes telling us how GM sucks and Ford, Ram and Toyota is soooo much better. It ruins the atmosphere for those of us who enjoy are GMs. Why is it so hard to quietly make your exit and go to your new forum to talk about how great your truck is? Trust me, if you decide to go GM and go back talking up your truck and talking down your former Nissan you'll most likely get the same reaction. I haven't set foot back on my Tacoma forum after selling my Tacoma to get my Silverado. I guess some people have no life or too much time on their hands to troll other forums and talk down other people trucks? Good luck on your decision. Regardless of my stated opinion, i feel each maker of truck brings something to the table, yes, i have no issue with Ford.

 

After lurking here for a few weeks I decided to join just to thank someone who's being reasonable about this thread.

 

I'm replacing my 2005 Frontier soon and have spent a lot of time on both this forum and the F150 forums. I'm amazed at how butthurt folk on BOTH forums get when anyone even mentions another brand. It really annoys me since the Frontier forum wasn't nearly as whiny. Unfortunately with talks of a 3rd kid I'll be outgrowing the Frontier soon. But threads like this are important to those of us doing research on our next truck purchase.

 

Over the weekend I test drove 2 used trucks: A 2015 Denali crew cab 4x4 with the 5.3 and 3.42 gears and a 2015 Lariat crew cab 4x4 with the 2.7 eco and 3.55 gears. I actually had the same complaints as the OP, the 5.3 seemed sluggish as did the transmission, while the 2.7ecoboost had instant power and firm shifts. I'm still on the fence as to which brand I'll end up with as there's qualities of both I like, but people making a big deal out of a member stating his reasons for switching trucks doesn't help the community's image.

I bought a 2016 Sierra Denali 5.3 (8 speed) - For the same price as a F150 platinum. Don't compare apples to banana's.

 

My friend has a ford Ecoboost, great truck, but the interior in my Denali still makes family and friends go "DAAAAMMMMNN" while they don't even notice the inside of the ford.

 

 

It was apples to apples for me because both trucks had 10k miles on them and were listed within $800 of each other. The Denali was actually cheaper. I know he Denali is supposed to compete more with the King Ranch or Platinum, but I felt the Lariat was every bit as nice as the Denali, with the exception of no rear TV screen for passengers and the aluminum wasn't real.

To each their own, but I don't find the materials in the Ford to be on the same level. My girlfriend is probably a terrible indicator but she has no brand preference and the platinum had more options and the amazing sun roof and she still said the GMC felt more "special".

Lots of chatter, I have been loyal GM - buying (2) LTZ SUV's and an 2LZ Silverado in the last three years. Absolutely love them, just pile on the miles so move them often to avoid the high mileage hit. It does bother me that I can't get all the high end features of a platinum or Limited F150 in the GM trucks. The high end fords have more tech features, but also cost more. I would absolutely love, and can't understand for what reason GM doesn't put Passive entry/keyless ignition, adaptive cruise control and more cameras on their "high end" trucks. At least they finally gave us back rain sense wipers (which came on my '07 $ '09 silverados, but not my '15 2LZ). The new Lane keep assist and automatic high beams are a nice addition, but after having adaptive cruise in my Tahoe and Suburban it pains me to travel without it in my Silverado. It would be nice to have a true manual shift automatic that stays in the gear you select as well. Ford did that right.

I think we have to keep in mind the potential of people paid to negative post on brands. Because it has been proven that many of the positive web reviews for products you research on the web and where there is a link to 'see reviews for this product" News outlets here in Canada anyway found out that people are paid to write positive reviews. So keep it in mind when on sites I suspect it can be occurring all over the place

The EcoBoost has a class action lawsuit against it, with hundreds of thousands of pissed off owners across the U.S alone. My point is, if you are seeking perfection in today's automotive market, I am sorry to say it isn't there. We are paying more than ever for these vehicles, but we are getting highly complex machines that are not just mechanical linkages anymore. It is a massive computer system on wheels with thousands of wires, connectors, harnesses, pins, ect ect. The good old days of transmissions that contained nothing but gears, linkages and oil are long gone. Accelerator pedals that linked directly to a throttle body with a cable, gone.

 

The new 5.3 has tons of balls, not sure how much power you want? Did you have 80 pound 35's on 3:08 gears? My 2015 5.3 with 3:73's is a power house. I can walk her sideways down the street laying rubber for a long ways, and if I punch it on the freeway, it sucks you back in the seat pretty good for a pickup truck.

 

Switching brands often means you get rid of brand #1 problems, but you now take on the problems of brand #2.

The only think that keeps me out of a Ford is their recent inability to design and build a "good" engine for trucks. I've owned and drove lots of Fords in the 90's and early 2000's (302, 351 windsor/clevland days) and those were awesome engines and great trucks. Then the 3v was built...4 friends of mine blew up a 5.4 before 70k miles. I had one and pitched it for a 98 sierra and thats all i have bought since. Why? Because a SBC is best engine platform hands down. From Gen 3 to current gen 5 they are amazing, long lasting engines. I would laugh in the face of the salesman that tries to tell me a strung out TT minivan engine will last as long. I will commend Ford for the high end interiors and technology always seem to be one step ahead of GM. I do think panoramic roofs are a bad idea though, unless your from the prairies.

That's not the 5.3's fault though. That's the electronic systems and maybe even the axle gear ratio in some trucks. If my '98 with a 5.7 with way less performance was able scratch off then I'm pretty sure the Ecotec3 5.3 can. The only difference is that the '98 didn't have any electronic systems to hold it back and had 3.73 gears. I know the 6.2 has no problem over coming those systems a little. But really the 6.2 isn't a huge difference from what I've seen and read. Some people are acting like the difference is like the difference between a 350 and 454 from back in the muscle car era. If I was able to get the 6.2 then I wouldn't have complained of course. But, people are acting like the 5.3 is weak when it's not.

I don't need to read about the difference, and God help the 5.3l tow in a headwind.

I've had both engines. One for myself, and the rest in my wife's vehicles. She has the 6.2l in her new Yukon Denali

460 lbs of torque...It's not a small difference, it's an ENORMOUS difference on paper and it shows up crystal clear on the road.

Tow with both, you will never own a 5.3l again.

Her 6.2l will also shamefully out tow my 6.0l with 4:10 rears.

All I'd have to do is regear to 3.73 and my 5.3 would tow what the 6.2 with 3.42 is able to. And I wouldn't have to buy premium gas. I plan to regear anyways but may have to go as low as 4.10 if I can't find 3.73 for the 9 1/2" rear end. Again I wouldn't complain if I was able to get the 6.2. My only point is that people are acting like the 5.3 doesn't have any balls when it does. I also want to do a mod that I believe spurshot did which is to replace the TB with the 6.2 TB which would also require the intake manifold. I think he said it made a pretty good difference with throttle response since the 6.2 TB is bigger.
