2005 Silverado Catalytic Converter

Hello, I have a 2005 Silverado LS Crew Cab 4wd 5.3L V8 and need to replace the Cat.

 

The truck was originally a California truck (I live in Wisconsin). My question is if I buy to whole cat system I can get a non-CARB compliant system for like $250. Will this fit/fix my vehicle? I am not sure if, because it was a California truck, the emission system is coded differently?

Any states that participate in California emissions regulations, by law they have to sell a CARB compliant cat. We have seen issues with non CARB cats on CARB vehicles where they will set a CEL after 50 miles, and throw P0420/P0430 codes non stop. IMO, get the right cats for your truck. Not worth the hassle down the line to save a $.

Wisconsin is not a CARB compliant state.

 

And if I can save upwards of $400+ dollars by getting a non-CARB compliant Cat I would absolutely love to.

CARB regulations required tighter emissions enforced through mandated warranty requirements. In the early days, car mtg added extra cats, o2 sensors on their CARB vehicles. They slowly figured out that these dual configurations were not adding enough margin/profit and simplified mfg costs by configuring a single design for all cars. Some if the vehicles did require larger cats, but they would fit directly with CARB vehicles.

 

You clearly fit the later model years and should be plug compatible.

 

When it comes to suppliers though, they too have the same economics problem. Do they make two types with one having more matrix and more platinum so they reduce the warranty claims. Some may while others might only make one, but offer the CARB compliant version by funding the warranty budget. If your supplier does not offer a CARB version, or the non CARB version is soo discounted, then they likely reduced the matrix or platinum content - beware.
