Yes, Another vibration thread

So I have tried searching and cant find anything to touch this subject yet. I have not noticed the high speed vibration many individuals are experiencing. However I am experience vibration at higher speeds when I begin to brake. Its a 2015 Silverado LT 4x4 CC, truck has 55K on it, mostly highway, and it is something that I have just been starting to notice. I haven't checked the brake pads yet, been too busy at work, but I don't think that could be the problem. I notice it mainly when I am beginning to brake to get off on an exit ramp mainly. The vehicle shakes pretty violently.

I just wanted to touch base and see if anyone else was experiencing this.

If only when braking could be warped/bad rotors.

Try this safely mind you, not during rush hour.

When going highway speed depress brake pedal as slowly as you can. It will start to shimmy, shake, vibrate. :happysad:

Lateral runout in the rotors. Typically caused by rapid heat cycles - EG hard braking then driving through a puddle.

Any shop worth its salt will have a brake lathe. If you can live with it, wait till you need pads to turn or replace the rotors.

Before you have rotors turned, see if you can find someone here who as had their rotors turned on one of these trucks.

My experience with GM cars from many years ago is that once you have the rotors turned they will warp almost immediately. Not sure if the depth of the heat treat is that shallow or if it's just crappy material in general. I gave up on turning rotors and just go ahead and buy new ones instead.

I bought AC Delco heavy duty rotors for my 2003 Silverado from Rock Auto. They arrived with a nice sticker on the box that said Made in China. Very disappointing.

I really wish I knew of a good source of quality rotors.

Same here, turned the rotors on my 2002 at 105k miles (original rotors) and withing 5k miles they were warped again so I bought new. And like DanY said, they were made in China but they held up till I traded the truck in with 130k miles.

Like others said - probably your rotors.

Do NOT turn the rotors on these trucks. They are GM's new "DuraLife" rotors that go through a special hardening process (called FNC for Ferritic Nitro-Carburizing). They can be turned but you remove the layer that has this treatment and after they they will actually warp FASTER than new non-FNC rotors.

Just replace the pads and rotors with new ones (either GM FNC or good aftermarket) and be done with it.

Probably rotors; I've had rotors warp to the point that the steering wheel would oscillate back and forth when driving, yet when applying the brakes, vibrations would stop. Also had rotors warped so bad that when hitting the brakes it felt like someone was slamming a hammer to the backside of the brake pedal.

Don't bother turning the rotors; these days, rotors are designed close to minimum thickness, along with specific coating as mentioned above. Multiply the lateral run-out times 2 to see how much material actually has to be removed in order to get them straight again, and you'll find that the new thickness is unacceptable for any appreciable miles and you'll be buying new rotors anyway within a few thousand miles. Every shop I know won't turn rotors anymore due to that reason. Throw in a few puddles or heavy braking in the cold, and rotor lifespan can be significantly reduced.

rotors - though it usually occurs more often in front drive vehicles. Do you brake hard or tow often? I see a lot of warp rotors when people brake a lot going downhill instead of down shifting..

Occurred on many of my cars in the past, corollas, accords, etc. The harder you press, the more violent it will shake!

Warped Rotors....Don't even bother turning waste of time/money get the OEM FNC coated and slap those on. I think they work just fine for stopping and I never tow so no bother for power stops for me. Plus, I am amazed at what little Brake Dust I have gotten almost non-existent! Kudos for GM for bringing this to their line-up.

Rotors warping on the full-size chevy's were classic problem a few years ago.....
