Flat tire question

Just got a text from Onstar that my tire is flat. Sure enough large chunk of a razor blade wedged in my tread. Doubt it can be plugged. I have the 22 inch gm tires with about 10k miles of wear. Can I replace just one tire or will that be too much difference in diameter? Hate to replace 2 tires or have 1 shaved.

You would have to measure the tread with a gauge first for a more accurate reading, to compare to a new tire. I'm sure the tire place will try to get you to buy at least 2 tires if not all 4. But 10k miles is not that bad if it's wearing evenly, again use a gauge to compare. But if it were me I would put the new tire up front and not worry about it.

4wd. And I bought the extended tire warranty at new truck purchase from dealer so they will replace one tire for sure if they can't plug it.

Well in that case with the warranty you should be good. And if more tires are needed shouldn't that be covered, otherwise what's the point of that warranty. And of course since they're paying I'm sure they'll say the one tire will be fine.

 

Again I would just put it up front and be sensible if you need to run 4wd. And don't run auto 4wd on pavement like some people do. I never run that auto.

If they have to replace the tire, it will not matter at all if the other tires have 10,000 miles on them.

In my area nobody will plug tires anymore, instead they will patch them from the inside which is probably a more reliable repair.

I don't know. That is a big piece of metal and a long slit. Not sure it would be fixable

I'd like to know how you ran over that. I've seen some big nails in tires before, but wow! I doubt they will repair that.

If this was my situation and I liked my tires, I'd replace two. If your dealer won't pay for both, they will probably give you a good deal on the second tire if you do a little effective whining! If your future plans are to replace these tires with a different size or brand then take the free replacement and don't worry where it is placed. After a couple of rotations, the new addition will blend in with the others!

I went kayaking this weekend drove through several park lots with lots of gravel and crushed stone. I'm sure that metal was hanging out in the gravel. Chevy dealer tech said he wasn't comfortable patching it so they are replacing the tire under the warranty I bought with truck. The tech said I had only worn 2/32s from new tread depth so no reason to replace 2 tires.

Of course the tech said this! Tire manufacturers will recommend tires are replaced in pairs, or ideally, all four. You will be fine but just for fun you should phone around to a local tire shop and see what they would have recommended under the same circumstances. I have also experienced conflicting tire measurements between stores. 10K miles and 2/32 wear on oem tires is a little on the gentle side, imo!

I was amazed to find a CO² cartridge embedded in my tire tread one day . I must have hit it and run on it for miles. You can pick up anything if you hit it just right.

They will, which will still help to inform the op. I personally think after 10k miles he should replace two tires but I also believe/understand this isn't necessary!

Usually the industry standard is within 3/32" per axle. Id say if your under that throw it in front and call it good (though it might pull slightly).

 

Some, like Subaru, say no more than 2/32 variation.
