Each year, Consumer Reports compiles the highest and lowest ranked vehicles based on owner satisfaction reports. GM didn't have any individual models on the 10-best list this year, but the Chevy Trax has the dubious distinction of making it to the 10-worst list. Still, the news for GM is great overall.

On Consumer Reports' compilation list of brands, Chevy and GMC scored very well.  Both earned an owner satisfaction score of 72. That score ties BMW's. Mercedes earns just a 67 and Lexus a 70. Cadillac (64) and Buick (66) scored near the bottom of the barrel. Unlike Consumer Reports editorial rankings, these scores are simply actual owners reporting how they feel about the vehicle they own.

I have subscribed to Consumer Reports for many years, but increasingly do not trust their rankings and will let my subscription drop when it runs out.

The question I have is, how much of this is real quality vs just perception?  My guess is the average Mercedes, Lexus, Cadillac, Buick, etc., buyer is much more discriminating (wanting everything perfect) than the average Chevy buyer (if I can jump start it, and I can slap an Earnhardt bumper sticker on the back of it, it's great, 'coz I got a Holiday Customer Cash Back on it).

Well said MaverickZ71. Much of the editorial stuff makes steam come out of my ears, but I do like to see how the owners themselves rate and rank what they own. Totally agree with your point that expectations may not be the same in mainstream vs premium.

I thought CR based their ratings on the surveys and feedback they get from their paid subscribers.

My wife drives a Lexus. This is her 4th. She has had almost no issues with any of them, and that is certainly impressive.  My last 4 vehicles have been GM,  a 2004 GMC 2500 Duramax, a 2007 Hummer H3, a 2007 Silverado Z71 and my latest, a 2015 Silverado Z71 Crew Cab.  I have had absolutely no issues with any of them, and would not hesitate to recommend a GM vehicle to anyone. That's dam impressive in my book. Consumer Reports can say what they want. My experience's have been perfect and I look forward to my next Silverado when they get the new body style out.

My wife drives Cadillacs.  And also in her last few has had zero issues.  It's hard to buy a bad car these days.  I just prefer to give my money to a company with roots in USA, not a foreign country.  Why is it so hard to be red blooded American these days?

You may want to check who’s hands do the assembly. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes have plants here and employs Americans.

Yes, but where is the HQ of that company?  You can design, engineer, and build vehicles in the USA, but if the company HQ is in South Korea or Germany or Japan, it's still an import as far as I am concerned.

You may want to check where some of the big three vehicles are built. The most American made car is Camry. You can put an office anywhere.

Vehicles can be a little like women, you can get a good one or sometimes a bad one. I have purchased GM vehicles since 1969, I have owned many pick-ups and a variety of autos, Impala, Caprice, Monte Carlo, Nova, Camaro and Chevelle to name some of them. It has seemed though that the newer models are the ones I have had the most trouble with, I mean who has a truck for a week and the power windows stop working, in the rain on the turnpike. Yes, my cruise control broke, my coil spring broke, my power steering pump went, my check engine light code was a bad throttle position sensor and the speakers were vibrating, other than that the truck was fine. I'm thinking right now about purchasing a 2019 Silverado, nothing too expensive but something with some creature comforts and the strongest engine available, that's only about 10 months away, better start saving now !!

the more crap they put into these things, the more problems we'll have, simple as that.  What year Caprice and Impala did you have?

She test drove a Cadillac and a Lincoln. I was hoping she would choose one because I, like you, prefer to buy American. She thought both were nice, but preferred the Lexus. She has worked hard and is an adult and I want her to drive what she wants to drive. I wouldn’t let her tell me what to drive. That’s probably one of the reasons we have been married 38 years. I think the Lexus dealership plays a role for her, they know her and treat her like gold. Trust me when I tell you, she’s a red blooded American.

LOL, I'm sorry, but this stuff makes me laugh when bozo's like this have issues with their vehicles and put "my" steering pump broke, "my" power windows failed, etc, etc. Since when are we as humans built like vehicles?? It's not "my" check engine light, it's the trucks check engine light...

Well unless the dude has a check engine light on him
