Extended Warranty Feedback

Recommended Posts

Got my hands on a immaculate 1 owner 2017 Sierra All Terrain.  It just rolled 31K on it.  Interested in any feedback on experiences with extended warranties that any of you would not mind sharing.  Thinking of extending the bumper to bumper and maybe the powertrain.

Any feedback would be very much appreciated.  Thanks in advance !

I think you will find a lot of different opinions on this here. I for one am all for extended warranties. We purchased one with my wife’s old 2011 Terrain and it paid for itself three times over. I purchased one with coverage up to 60K on my 15 Sierra and just 900 miles outside of the coverage period, both wheel speed sensors went out. Would have cost me $1500 if the dealer didn’t help out with a customer satisfaction policy. Instead it cost me $500 but at the time of pickup after that repair I purchased an extended warranty out to 170K.

With all the electronics, sensors and so on in the vehicles anymore, I don’t think you can go wrong. Just make sure you get a warranty that covers things like electronics and what not. Mine is basically the same as the factory bumper to bumper with a $50 deductible. It cost me $2100 at time of purchase and I have the peace of mind knowing I can go anywhere and be covered along with have roadside assistance should i ever need it.

Thanks for the info.  Exactly what I was looking for.  Was it the GM extended or another product?

Make sure you read the fine print of what’s covered and what’s not even on a “bumper to bumper”. Just like the factory power train doesn’t cover fuel injectors, high pressure fuel pumps, or vacuum pumps cause apparently those ain’t required for the power train to function...

Also this has been discussed on here before if going with the GM warranty you can shop around for price, different stealers will offer same warranty at different prices it doesn’t matter which one  you purchased it from as they all have to honor it. I’m sure somebody will pipe in and let you know which dealer to buy it from if I remember right there’s one that’s like the equivalent to Laura GMC is to buying new trucks.

Based on recommendations from the Corvette people out there, I'm looking at getting a GM warranty from Dennis Fichtner from Denny Menholt Chevrolet. He guarantees to match/beat anybody's price. I've got a quote that's pretty decent. One stipulation with this warranty is that you need to have an oil change/filter done prior to buying it, so I've got that set up here in about ten days and will get the warranty after that.

You can also print the quote you received and take that to your local dealer (or any dealer you like) and ask them to match that quote.  Often they will match the price. And remember, a GM warranty is a GM warranty no matter where you buy it.

You can also share the best price you find so others may want to buy a GM warranty at your price too.

I bought a 4Runner around a year ago, with 55k miles on it.  Bought the Toyota extended warranty.  Paid like $2800 and it was bumper to bumper/powertrain.  2 months pass by, and I hadn't used it yet.. was thinking of trading, so I cancelled it and was reimbursed a prorated amount (like $2720) or something.

Went to buy my used 15 Silverado and went ahead and bought the extended warranty.  Bought it through ALLY, but it covers pretty much any functional part of the truck, and all the small details.  I didn't plan on buying one, but after seeing all the electronics/computers/etc. inside these vehicles, I decided to get one.  I was positive $8k equity on my trade in, so the warranty didn't hurt me as bad as someone who  might have a higher pay off price with no equity.

I don't think I will ever buy used without getting the extended, especially in this day and age of cars/technology in the cars.  There is just that peace of mind there, and it just raises your payment a little bit a month.

Yeah, there is a very long list of exclusions. So make sure you read that before you decide to buy it. Its a gamble, you may win, but more likely the dealer wins. They don't offer these products because they are losing money on them. Its your choice, but just don't go into it thinking you'll never have to pay for a repair.

I bought one and regret it, I wish I had my $2,000 back.

Any extended warranty on any product is a personal choice.

I choose not to buy them, not even on my used vehicles and have never had a major problem.

Maybe I'm lucky. I do a through inspection, test drive before purchasing a vehicle. If I purchase from a dealer or used car lot, they must put it up on a lift for me to inspect the undercarriage. No lift inspection, I walk.

Think about this.

I got burned out doing construction and my back was having problems.

Got a job at Montgomery Wards selling appliances. They went belly up in a year.

Went to Sears.

They both sold extended warranties on appliances.

They pushed the sale of these hard.

Sears had a required minimum percentage that you were expected to meet every month.

They both paid you well to sell the extended warranty because it was a big money maker.

Same deal read the fine print.

Anything that sounds to good to be true usually is.

It is one of the biggest profit makers the dealer sells. Right up their with magic wax and magic fabric sprays. I guess the bigger question is why would you buy a product that your feel certain it will fail in the next few years?

well of course don't buy it from your local dealer, because they will charge an arm and leg for it.  Buy from an online dealer that specializes in the GM warranties.  I had one for our Honda van and used it several times, was well worth it.  I have one for my 2014 Sierra.  I'm taking it in next week for the leaky radiator issue.  If they don't cover it under the special service bulletin for these radiators, then I know for sure it will still be covered under my GM extended warranty.

Hey Steve thanks what company did you use for your Sierra please?

I got an extended warranty on my 2014 Cruze diesel.  It already paid for it's self when the front air shutters kicked a code.  They had to replace the entire assembly. I was out of my B2B warranty.

We purchased a warranty for our 2016 suburban.  Seems the magna-ride shocks have issues and at $500 a pop it wouldn't take long to make up that warranty cost. Not to mention the AC condenser and the Mylink issues.

We got the GMEPP from Jame's Black Cadillac. What hurt was getting it at 35k miles on the vehicle.  I should have gotten it at 1k and the price would have been half of what we paid. I shopped around and they were lowest price I could find.

Dennis Fichtner from Denny Menholt Chevrolet as mentioned earlier.  Bought in January 2017.   But never heard of the requirement of getting an oil change beforehand?
