It has according to the DIC towing my boat.

This only happens in August on my way home due to the grades I pull once I leave the main road.

After I get the boat in the garage, I let the truck run with the hood open to cool the trans and motor down.

;)

So it's situational and rare. No harm in that me thinks.

This is posted in my build thread but seems appropriate in this thread. Actual readings over about the last year after the thermostat modification. (Bypass by flipping the pill). Transmission fluid temperature at a fixed speed vs air temperature. Data was gathered after an hour at speed. 15 minute hot soak which spikes the temperature. Then reading plotted is the recovery temperature after about 30 minutes.

This one is transmission temperature vs speed at a fixed temperature.  Between the two it is apparent that the above graph is the lowest temperature obtainable.

Missing info IMO.

How much towing?

The weight towed?

Important info IMO.

Mostly highway
Regular service intervals
Very Little towing (racecar 5 or 6 times a year)
My guy has done a pile of 6L80es (had 4 there while doing mine) and the valve in the front pump is the culprit 95% of the time. My torque converter was in my pan lol

No problem!
He also said he’s starting to see 8L90s with the same issue just not as many. Though the 6L80 is fairly old by comparison to the 8

Questions. "Regular" means? Regular or Severe schedule? Stock factory layout? I see you are from up north so I assume that's kilometers not miles? 87,000 miles - 140,000 kilometers. Correct?

Did you guy happen to expound on what exactly was wrong with this valve? Pretty simple valve. Plug, spring, "O" ring? If he didn't can  you find out?

Regular per gm maintenance schedule.
Stock factory layout? Not sure what this means but it is as purchased.
Nope 140k miles 225k km
I can try to find out. But it could be as simple as any other common problem “GM saved 4 cents purchasing this inferior valve and most fail outside of warranty so why make it better?”
Cheers

GM has two schedules. Regular and Severe Service. Regular is fluid and filter at something like 90K miles and Severe at 45K.

As purchased, factory, unmodified. Just checking. Guys (like me) tinker. Just fact checking.

140K miles then. Still early for one so well maintained. Sorry that happened to you.

I am interested in the repair for the issue. If reamed and/or sleeved or shell replaced; the bore wore. If the shuttle and seal was replaced the seal failed. IF the balance spring broke that's just on the "it happens' list. Filtration (wear), Seal (heat) or spring (mechanical failure).

I'm looking for root cause. Why? Just the way I'm wired. It's how we learn. Replacing failed parts with parts that fail leads to another failure. Right? I'm just under 90K on mine.

If you can find out you can, if not that's fine too. Just asking. Either way thanks for the exchange of information.

No problem. If it helps the transmission never overheated. Ever. Highest temp I ever saw was 200f in the middle of summer. So I think we can rule out over heating. Even when it failed (drove home in third so tc wouldn’t lock up) it still wasn’t hot. So mechanical failure would be most likely. The reman front pump I believe was built with a different valve. My guy said he hasn’t had a return issue in dozens of rebuilds. Mom and pop shop. His dad was rebuilding powerglides and other 50s and 60s transmissions. For me he rebuilt an old Chrysler intrepid fwd, 2004R, powerglide, 6L80e, 4L60E and a 700R4 and I haven’t had to go back for any. Really good shops around here are few so I’m glad I found one close by. But yes 90K regular service since I didn’t do much severe duty stuff like towing or off roading.

My 93 Silvy with the 4l60 went 230 K miles before a problem doing severe duty maintenance.

I towed with it and drove mountains here in Colorado.

I hope this holds true for my 6l80 trans.in my 2012.

I will do 25 K mile services on this one.

Just replaced my transmission, GM reman 3yr/100k warranty

2014 Silverado LT

5.3L motor

6.5" lift with 35" tires

Serviced the transmission at 60k miles

Turned over 120k and transmission died at 120,025.

Tech guy said pump failed or torque converter, heat killed it.

I'm worried about my motor now.

My old denali with a 6.2 full bolt ons had 180K miles when it was totaled.  I owned it from 90K miles up and never did anything to the 6L80e.  My current 2014 L86 that I just cammed has 122K miles on the stock 6L80e.  I'm not worried about it either.

My 14 is getting a new transmission. Gm has it on order right now. 110k. Pump failed. I bought it at 85k. Did transmission fluid and filter change along with all other fluids.
