So what air filter is good for the stock box? I pretty much see the oem replacement and k&n but it sounds like the k&n isn't actually that great for this truck. Any good dry options that flow better than a stock replacement?

The K&N panel filter has been great in my truck. No issues. I had issues with the MAF getting thrown off by the new amounts of air with a CAI. The K&N intake pipe I got, and K&N drop in filter in the stock air box has been awesome! Those holes is drilled really added some turbo/intake/engine sound. I’m really happy. It’s running better than ever.

I would have no hesitation getting a K&N panel filter.

I am running O'Reilly's MGA10941  no foam pre-filter and compared to OEM it has more pleats quality media and air filter monitor still at 100% at 6700 miles since change.

The OEM original HD media was loaded with dust and showing 85% at 8300 miles.

When I did this change I was able to compare oil analysis combustion dynamic testing for both and fuels dilution via gas Chromatography.

The lower cost O'Reilly air filter ( house brand ) works better and flows more air based on those reports AND I see better MPG.

Now it doesn't sound cool....LOL

I see the 2.7 fan club is officially set to expand to Colorado owners. 3 different output levels.

Perfect engine for that truck. Just have to wonder, they keep making the Colorado bigger. And keep making the Silverado bigger. Is the new Colorado the same size as an old Silverado yet!?

Yeah that mid and high output are going to be beasts in the Colorado.

So far from the dimensions GM posted, its less than 1 inch longer overall.  They added wheelbase to it, and its overall 8-9 inches taller too.  So not any bigger in length, but it gained height so its as tall as a K2 1500 was.

Unfortunately that 2.7 (as good as it is as a base engine) is still way down compared to the new v6 turbo raptor/ranger. And nobody wants to pay for a software upgrade, the three 2.7 variants are all mechanically identical. Then they make the BS claim that the 2.7 doesn't need the 10 speed because of the torque it delivers, and yet throw the 10 speed behind the 3.0 diesel in the full size which makes way more torque. Typical GM. 🙄

Huh?  You’re all over the place bro. What software update?

Back to the intake filter, I’ve always been told that the k&N didn’t have very good filtration. What are y’all’s thoughts on that? I’d rather have more protection vs power.

I’ve had several vehicles with their product. Never had a problem. My highest mileage was 180K. Those vehicles usually spent lots of time off road in the dust. All were on extended oil changes with Amsoil.

K&N have pretty good protection. If you want more protection over flow go with an AirRaid Dry filter

K&N or any oiled air filter media will work well if serviced PERFECTLY each and every time and often enough that its not clogged and bypassing unfiltered air.

If you get a micro tear in the cotton media from K&N IT WILL SUCK DUST really well and of course get great intake flow with all that sandblasting dirt. No matter how effectively you re-oil it.

Medias that are synthetic and oiled do better.  I prefer not having a faux oiled bath air filter.

This from testing for 43 years.

Unless you are racing,..... stock engines CFM demand or optimum need will not need a modified air filter. Sound via intake or exhaust not equal to power production or efficiency. Makes for good marketing.

I said "software upgrade". The engines are mechanically identical, the "upgrade" in the engine options is just software/tunes, nobody wants to pay for that type of BS. It's a turn off.

I’m not sure it’s JUST software. But it’s business. It’s been that way for years. They have tamed down the LS LT motors for years so it doesn’t look better than the corvette in other cars. There’s “tiers” to the Colorado for a reason. They put an amazing engine in it and people will still complain lol.

The 2.7 high output engine (2nd generation)does have a different more rigid  block, a new stiffer crank (30% more material) and crank bearings, they are supposed to be similar to Diesel engine bearings, whatever that means lol. So there are material differences from the 1st generation.
