V.2019 GM Navigation Updates on Sale for $99

Its not just the 2019 trucks that can be updated. Its 14+. I dont see a need to update especially if the roads you travel havent changed. Maybe update if you travel all over the country and tour map is atleast 2 years old.

Late to the party here.   I pulled the trigger and bought the 2019 disc back in June, needed it for roads that have changed and added.   After updating my 2016 I took a look at the file dates on the USB drive.  The most recent file update date was May 22 2018.  So the 2019 Nav disc actually has early 2018 maps.   See screenshot of file excerpt. So if you're considering purchasing this late in 2019, hold off until the 2020 disc comes out with early 2019 updates.

I believe that Apple car play and Android auto is a great alternative to factory navigation but it does have it disadvantages when you loose your cell signal. At that point $100.00 doesn't seem so bad. Nothing wrong with having a backup plan.

You missed the point where you can download offline Google Maps.  So - AGAIN - the factory Nav is worthless and is stupid to spend any money updating it.  And I have the factory Nav...

I believe that it is worthless and stupid to buy Factory nav and not update it. But then again, I get picked on because I am so anal about my truck. Everything must function as intended and all service has to be done on time along with keeping it spotless.

Except many of us didn't "buy" the factory Nav, but we were rather forced into it to be able to get other options.  I would have loved to have been able to save $500 (or $100 for that matter) and not get the Nav.  But I wanted options that have the Nav packaged in.  

 

I'm not sure how not updating a worthless Nav setup is not taking care of the truck.  I also don't pay for On Star or Hot Spot either - do you waste your money on that too?  Doesn't mean I don't keep my truck clean and well maintained.

My wife handed me the mailing from GM/Chevrolet about getting the up date for the Nav.  So I thought I would see what was being said on this forum.  A lot of good food for thought, thanks everyone.

After reading this thread, I dusted off the old Garmin I purchased new from Costco in March of 2013, hooked it up to the computer and installed the updates.  It took an hour or two, but now it's up to date and works as advertised.

Why would I spend a penny short of $100.00 for a one year old update from GM?  Oh, wait, and that's the sale price?  Somewhat shameful I would say.

Maybe in a couple of years I might spring for the update, maybe.

You do not need data or even cell service to use Waze or Here WeGo on your cell phone if it has a built on GPS chip. Most Samsung phones have GPS built in.

Using GPS in real-time, i.e. not downloading a map prior to driving DOES use cellular data...Just to clarify for folks that do not have a data plan...If you download the maps ahead of time onto your phone then it will not require data.

No you don’t need data.. it needs data for turn by turn, but it’s possible to use it without data.. I watched my location while on the plane in Europe without data.

That is correct, GPS does use data for real-time navigation, i.e. turn-by-turn unless you download the maps prior to leaving. Traffic data and other user inputs (police, accidents, car on shoulder) from Waze require cellular data to populate during the trip. I will say, playing devil's advocate, one might consider using factory nav to avoid being tracked by google, et al. Although your phone most likely is doing it in the background anyway...Makes a case for going "off the grid" with Rand McNally lol...

When you feel the urge to go on a trip. You’ll be real glad to burn data on your phone using real time GPS such as WAZ. I don’t splurge on many things but unlimited data is one. I use my phone for everything.

Has anyone ever tried modifying the the VIN on the factory nav update drive? I usually just use google maps on android auto, but have a friend who uses his truck for his business and prefers the factory nav. He handed me the most current USB to see if i can figure it out just for fun. Waze won't load if you don't have a data signal, been a little while since I've used it. I found google really struggles even with offline maps to load as well. 

If I can update the factory nav just to be current for a backup in those instances I'll be more than happy to pitch in some for future updates. It's a business write off for him, not worth even half the $99 discounted price available at times to me. I might feel different if I was on vacation and lost my phone though.
