Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to take a look at the different Rexing options and probably get something ordered today. I can't think of a good reason to not have one in each vehicle for the small upfront cost. 

 

Update on the claim process; turns out the other driver did have insurance but has made a recorded statement that I was at fault and hit them. Sounds like this could be a long battle, but the police report says that they ran the stop sign and I have a witness. We'll see how far they are willing to take it. I expect a preliminary damage estimate on our car tomorrow. At this point I don't think it will be a total loss.

I got one for the same reason,so I always have a witness.

I’m using a BlackVue DRS650 and it’s been going strong for at least 3-4 years. The nice thing about BlackVue is you can wifi the clip to your phone on the spot which probably would’ve been useful in your situation.

I have a Viofo A119 in my Malibu but it only runs when the car is on. Which I think is more the car than the camera. I don’t think it keeps the cigarette lighter powered.

I also have a Yi camera in my truck and our Lexus. The video quality is great and it is Bluetooth so you can download the footage to your phone. Plus it automatically saves footage that has a 2-4 or 6 G incident. Here’s a pic that I got off of it showing the retard who blew rocks all down the side of my truck with his mower. I showed the video to the sherif when he came to write a report about it.

Viofo A119 V3 is out now, but I've been using the A119S V2 for a year now with no problems in the FL heat.  I leave it recording anytime I'm not at home too.  In cab temps above 120F and device temps above 150F especially with the reflective sunshade for the windshield up.  Recently started using a custom firmware for slightly better video quality and a little higher bit rate (stock is fine I just like to tinker).  I keep reading everyone saying you have to use a high endurance card, yeah it's probably a good idea, but by the time the 256GB card I have starts to die I'll be on another cam or a larger card anyway.  Plus the largest endurance cards I've found is 128, not including the WD 256GB that is 3-4x the price.  As far as 4k I think prior to this year all the "4K" cams were just upscaled and none had a true 4k sensor.  I think that might have changed this year but haven't been following too closely.  www.dashcamtalk.com if you want a forum dedicated to nothing but dashcams.  Some of my vids are at https://www.youtube.com/user/Chevy85Guy/videos The recently time stamped ones are from the Viofo the older ones are from whatever I had prior.

Just put the Blueskysea Mini 906 front and rear cam in my truck a couple weeks ago, hardwired it also and it has a parking guard function. Too soon to say how well it'll hold up but it has been good so far, very clear recording, good night time recording and not too hard on the wallet.

 

Sad thing was while it was ordered and i was waiting on it to arrived i got rear-ended... ? Luckily got everything fixed with no hassle regardless.

The wifi works on mine but not in 4k mode. You can download HD videos but not UHD.

Accidents SUCK!!!!  Wish I would have had one in my '15 Silverado in July of 2018.  Still fighting this idiot in court, Kern County v. IDIOT, court date TBD.  Definitely getting on for all three of our vehicles, leaning towards the Rexing V1 Pro.  For now, we picked a $70 one from Walmart, and take it everywhere we travel, even down to Burbank Airport.  We're not too worried about to/from work/school.

Regular SD cards can't withstand the high temps encountered in dash-cams or the vibration. They are also limited on the number of times they can be over-written before they start to corrupt. High endurance cards will last, typically, 20 times longer.

Cheap SD cards suck, especially in the desert.

I have a Wish List for each vehicle in our Amazon account, and have one of these saved for each vehicle.  There was bad lighting?  Didn't even notice.

      So, my 2021 only gets radio updates, right? If that's the case, my radio is doing just fine and probably better off without any updates, especially considering the problems I've been reading about after updates were performed.

      The problem with failure rates or increase failures are there’s people who don’t have a problem. What are you doing wrong they say. We had 4 5.7 GM diesel’s in the family when they came out. One was flawless. My uncle who happened to be the most abusive. Early rotary engines were known to use oil. I abused my first car so bad in six months I replaced the clutch, transmission and rear end. It didn’t use oil. My brother in law has a 2013 Tahoe and an older Yukon. The Yukon has 280K miles. The Tahoe around 175K. He runs them to about 300K. If his lifters fail before that time he would consider it a failure. My Hondas, I know people hate it when I mention them. Identical engines. One with cylinder deactivation one doesn’t have it. One shudders when the eco light goes on or off. Cylinder deactivation. But wait! According to the web. It can happen with lock up too. So now people in the know are changing the oil and transmission fluid more often. Then you read it could be a programing issue. So what do you do? There’s lots of money involved. I see three ways to deal with it. One only works if you don’t drive lots of miles. Lease, never get out of warranty. Or only buy older vehicles with a good track record. They all have bad runs. Usually when there’s a change. Even Toyota and Honda.

      Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.       UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update
