From what I've read on this and other forums, you can do either.  Some people initially fill without, and then notice a bit of shuddering, and add some friction modifier and the shuddering goes away.

 

You are the first person to suggest that adding friction modifiers causes them to wear out faster.

Believe this is the top view because of the circular port.

Also that gives you a better idea of how dark the fluid is, yuck.

I believe that is the bottom, this side points towards the ground.  More pics soon.

Seems to have some sort of mesh or foam or something in that opening.

 

Not sure if that sticker on that box is valid for this filter, its just what I received my old filter in when I went to pickup truck.

$546.29 labour and shop supplies is what was quoted. Different shops have different labour rates just wondering how that fit into the equation ?
