STGS Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 (edited) Have a 2020 Chevrolet 3500 4wd. Anybody else have the noisy steering column. Has a popping click sound when making slow speed turns. Never hear it at highway speeds. Always at slow speed maneuvers. My 15 did it also but my 17 did not. The one thing that my 15 and my 20 have in common is neither had the digital steering assist. My 17 had the assist and didn't make the noise. Drives me crazy. Edited November 4, 2019 by STGS
MTU Alum Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 Are you sure it is in the column? I have seen some popping in front suspension. This is usually fixed by loosening your upper and lower control bolts and re-torqueing at ride height. When suspension bolts in bushings don't get torqued at ride height they get preloaded and can cause noise at slow speeds in parking lots.
Warren underhill Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 I have the same steering clunk at low speed turns as well on my 2020 Denali HD with digital steering. I hoped in a new ltz Silverado and the same thing...... I haven’t herd that noise since my 2006. Terrible. Goes nicely with the steering wheel wobble 1

I would say it's the bearing or bushing in the column. It coincides with the turning of the steering wheel at slow speeds. 1
hkyfsh Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 I have the same sounds on my 2020 Denali HD, really only notice it at very slow speeds, and when its cold.

cmysstailights Posted November 14, 2019 Posted November 14, 2019 My 14 and 15 did it. Dealer fixed the 15. Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Muleytime Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 I'm having this or similar noise. It's only really noticeable on rough roads. I drive on dirt washboard road very often, an I swear I can feel the bumps up through the steering column. You can also hear some light clanking noises as well.
Muleytime Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Here's a video clip of the noise. Not sure how many of you drive on dirt washboard roads much, but I do somewhat often, and you can imagine how annoying this noise and the feeling that comes up through the steering. Several years back I had a new chevy with similar noises and feel. The service department told me to bring it in and they would grease the column periodically which seemed to help. I mentioned this to the current dealer and was told there is no way for that to happen as now they are engineered with sensors. Well, it's happening! IMG_0290.mov
NotADumbGirl Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 I have a 2020 Chevy HC 2500 diesel. Mine makes the same clunking noise. When the ignition is in acc mode, you can move the steering wheel back and forth and it clunks. No power going to it at all. I’ve been working with two different truck stores and the dealer. The custom truck shops believe it is a bad steering box. This has been a problem for 11,000 miles. I’m sick of it. I live in a rural area and the roads are bumpy. You can feel the clunk all the time. When you turn slightly left or right, it doesn’t do it. Only when going straight. I have a dealer appointment next week.
