no surprise given its down on torque by 140ft lbs. really disappointed GM didn’t update this engine along with the new body.  This is what sets the Ford and GM sales apart. Ford throws everything at their trucks while GM plays games.

Fortunately I don't run the I70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel very often, and I never tow 30,000+....

but it makes interesting bench towing discussions.

There's a reason Mr. Truck is driving. In most states you need a CDL to haul that much. I don't know many folks who do. The couple I do know that have one, had to get it as part of some job requirement. My cousin has one, because he needs it for hauling horse trailers (wait, that's part of his job). ? .. .

The Fords have some nice features for sure, and definitely more power. It would be nice if manufacturers were more competitive with each other instead of leaving so much on the table.

However, with that being said, for me personally I could never buy a Ford. They look like great trucks but the exterior styling of Fords just never did it for me and I know I'd never be happy with it haha. I actually really love the Chevy redesigns, I didn't like the previous gens but the new style is what got me to switch originally from Toyota. I have no regrets switching to Chevy, I just now wish they had all the Pro's of other manufacturers and not any of the Con's. I know :) not possible, but I can still wish it haha. That pano roof though, I at least want that!

I enjoy watching all the TFL vids and comparisons, even with all that extra power I wasn't expecting a whole minute quicker on the uphill tow, that's pretty impressive.

What are your thoughts on their downhill brake applications test? Do you think the Ford just does a better job managing the exhaust brake or something to do with having more torque, does that apply to more "braking" force from the exhaust brake?

I'm new to diesels so please excuse my ignorance ?

Considering how many times the Duramax has blown the Ford AND Dodge out of the water, it was just a matter of time before the Duramax got beat.  No big deal.  The Duramax/Allison is still the best power train out there reliability wise.

I agree. The fact that the new 6.6 gasser has outperformed the new 7.3 gasser in tests so far is good for business, too. Powertrain-wise, all the HD trucks have great choices.

That's good to know! I haven't been following the HD trucks at all until a few weeks ago so am unaware of all the past history. But I'm definitely excited about the Duramax/Allison match up.

Not really surprised at the Dmax time. More surprised the Powerstroke did that amazing. I think ford is seriously sandbagging on power and underrated. Tfl did a dyno vid with 5 star tuning and the 2020 Powerstroke put down 470/970 to the wheels ?. That truck is probably making 550/1100 at the crank!

Lots of good thoughts above!  I'm not sure it got "crushed", and I think there are multiple reasons to still go with the GM truck that were not part of their testing.

I did just see the follow up they did comparing the GM 2500HD to a Ram 3500 dually on that same pass and the two were tied in all respects.

Agree

I did not watch the vid. Doesn't interest me.

Are we racing or towing?

BFD   If I understand the Ford was 1 minute faster up the einsenhower.

I live in Colorado and have driven that road many times.

Speed is not my goal.

Reliability is number 1.

No matter what Ford builds, I won't own one.

:)

I think you just might have a thing for ugly trucks.

It's a good strategy that BMW has been using for a long time.  Don't ruin everything all at once.  Stick with a proven reliable drivetrain in a new platform, then switch in a new/updated drivetrain later on in the cycle once the platform has the kinks worked out.

If you change everything all at once then your service techs have to deal with that many more teething issues and launching a real lemon can sink the whole company when it's your bread-and-butter vehicle.

Also a good reason to launch the high-$$$ SUVs following the trucks, so buyers paying that premium never experience the early platform issues truck buyers do.

lol I think I resemble that also.  A lot of people thought my Isuzu VehiCROSS was pretty ugly.

OOoo. Where/ what have you been watching? I haven't seen much of anything pitting those two against eachother. Been looking for some.

No direct comparisons side by side yet, but TFL did a towing MPG loop and an empty MPG loop and the GM gas engine fared better in both, also with far more weight in it's test. It will be interesting to see how it does when the IKE video is released, considering how they bashed the GM for it's performance. I'm sure it will be a this one is better here, but this one here type of thing going forward, though. If the 6.6 outperforms the 7.3 in every test (which I doubt), that would make the 7.3 a complete failure. I had a 2017 Super Duty with the 6.2 and was quite satisfied with the engine performance, so I expect the 7.3 to be better than both in most situations.

TFL released an extended, behind the scenes cut of the IKE Gauntlet runs. The Ford's transmission temperature was 235 degrees and the electric fan was cycling on and off the whole run.? The GM Allison trans was running at 185.

    • I would be surprised if the diff's were not filled (with the cheapest gear lube) at the axle factory before being shipped to GM.  If you ever watched them building trucks they install the axles and all suspension parts with the frame upside down and then turn it over before its time to install the engine.     Too much gear lube in a axle can be worse than not enough especially with a lower quality GL where is get whipped up with entrained air (foam)  weakening its ability to lubricate.
    • This is the 6.6 gasser section of the forum, you should either delete or modify your previous post as it is misleading for anyone looking for factual information on their 6.6 gas engine.
    • Well....I've done my first intake gasket. Probably wrong, but...we'll see?   Ultra black on the china walls and 1/4" up onto the sides of the intake gaskets. Permatex High Tack (couldn't find Gaskachinch) on the head side of the intake gasket. I read wrong and it says you're supposed to put it on the mating surface of the head, not the gasket. Hoping it's like a PB&J sandwich where it doesn't matter what side the PB goes on so long as there's jelly. That crap is messy/sticky and I got a dab or two on the intake port openings, tried to wipe it off. Hopefully it won't be a big deal and will only aid in sealing.   Per instructions I left the intake (top side) of the gasket dry except for a light smear of RTV around the coolant ports. Wiggling the intake in there was a bear but I had help to free me of surrounding wiring/stuff but I was basically able to set it straight down lined up with the bolt holes.   I did not think to wait until the RTV skinned over but there probably was 5-10 minutes while it sat before installing the intake.   Bolts finger tight first. Then, followed the Chilton's manual pattern to snug them to 15 lb-ft.   Waited a little over an hour, and then did the final torque in sequence again to 35 lb-ft.   Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and got my new "nut and bolt kit" (fuel lines) installed. Damn GM used security torx on the spider, which I don't have, so I got scammed at the local HW store for an off-brand security Torx bit set.   The new driver's door mirror arrived yesterday, so, there's a chance this thing could be running and road legal tomorrow? I don't want to get my hopes up.   This will be my first time stabbing a distributor, too. Although, lucky me, someone else marked the old distributor for removal previously, I did see that. (Someone's been here before!!). Engine is still at TDC so it *should* be just a matter of transferring the mark to the new dizzy and rotating it into place.
    • He has his dad’s newer truck he’s put away. He has several old cars he rotates between him and his family. I’ve seen a restored square body and a SS Chevy truck he’s sometimes drives. He did raffle off a new suburban recently. As much as he is watched if he drove new stuff as a rule we’d know it. It would be fine by me. I don’t care what people prefer. I got one more new one in me. I’d rather my wife get one. I can’t get her out of the Genesis. Don’t tell anyone. I want her to get an electric truck. I want to put a generator in the back. Just because. She hasn’t bit yet.
    • Yes, you must have seen my thread on the Blazer. HOT GARBAGE, but I love them anyway. I'm convinced every car guy has a soft sport for an S/T series somewheres. Probably even a Panther too, if I'm being an honest car guy. That doesn't mean they aren't junk. And they definitely don't get better with age. I sometimes play with old cars, but that's by choice. I don't rely on them and they aren't my everyday fleet.   Derek plays the common man on Youtube and that's no doubt where he started. Now he has Youtube money (and Motortrend, etc). You think his crews and his wife ride around in old beaters when they're chasing him and his wrecks across the country? No he's got newer and nicer stuff for that, you'll see glimpses of it in the footage.
