I've often looked at that and thought about how much heat comes off that pipe and heats up the pan and in turn the fluid.

If there was a shield there it would have to help wouldn't it

Or am I overthinking this?

Remove the transmission line thermostat if hot transmission temps concern you. Should drop it 30-40 degrees easy.

Possibly only at really long idle times would the heat really rise to what's above it. Airflow under the truck while driving won't let it do much to the fluid temps.

See I was overthinking it .

How is this thermostat removed?

Took me maybe 30min start to finish taking my time. I lost maybe 1oz of fluid just removing the block, didn't even add any fluid back in to be honest.

In my experience?

YES, and like a TON

When I installed LongTube Headers, I relocated the exhaust to cross under the truck under the transmission yoke; The results? It now takes dramatically more time for the transmission to reach operating temperature.

The Transmission still operates at 88-92*C because it has a Thermostat inside. It takes it much more time to reach 90 tho. But at least the exhaust now is not cooking the transmission fluid needlessly.

I agree with Eddie, buy cheap header wrap in AutoZone and go to town with that whole pipe

Cheers

I thought about this for a while and I feel like gm put it where it is to keep the trans temp up in the winter since there is a cooler up front.

If you do regular trans service's it's not an issue.

Well it's been near 100° for the past few days and mid 90s for the next week. I think I'm going to flip the pill. My lifted truck heats up to 185 in around 10 miles. I just did a flush and filter so I may as well.. My stock Double cab rarely even hits 185 after 30 miles

Do it. It’s very easy, quick, and reversible. Took me less than 15 min to pull the block, flip the thermostat, and put it back on. Drove about 30 mi in 86 deg temps and trans temp only got to 156 deg. Normally would have been 180-190.

Well worth it! Cruising on 94 down to your neck of the woods Friday I never reached above 170, ambient air temps showed around 97-100. Only thing I worry about is our cold winters, but I never had an issue this past cold season. I think next winter I will install the sure-cool tstat and see how well it heats the fluid up on my short drive to work. Those -20 degree days I only saw about 100F trans temp by the time I reached work, hence the worrying...

I get 135-140 at 70 degrees ambient and 156 in 105 F ambient heat.

i didnt do a pill flip, i gutted mine and used a pipe plug to block the crossover area, maybe it has higher fluid flow using a pipe plug, instead of a flip ???

First, unless your work in 100 miles away it would never reach the thermostat setting anyway. It was the second reason I flipped my pill. Quicker warm up even in cold weather. Yes the peak is lower but that same number is reached much sooner.

Second, what is the worry? It performed fine from cold start until warm up didn't it? Like automatic transmissions have since the early 60's when they first started using coolers in the radiator. Pre 2014 there wasn't a thermostat on the transmission. They actually lasted longer.

Maybe I've been thinking this wrong since I did the thermostat mod (I didn't "flip" the pill, I used the 1/4" NPT tap with a brass plug method)

To my recollection, the point of the thermostat is when the fluid temp hits the designated temp (180F?) the cooler bypass (tstat) opens up and starts to cool the transmission.. If there is no thermostat, it recirculates fluid at all times causing it to heat up slower? I always thought too cold is just as bad as too hot since the fluid is less viscous.. Like I said, maybe I'm overthinking it and am by no means an expert when it comes to transmissions!

I find it pretty funny, on my dads AT4 w/ the 6.2/10spd, hauling a 7x14 all aluminum trailer with 2k lbs in it on the interstate, it runs no warmer than 160F. Wonder what they did in the new 10 speeds that allows for a much cooler temp.. factory trans cooler, different thermostat, etc.
