My biggest complaint about my 2019 when I got it was that the back end felt "light." I live in a rural area and drive probably 35% gravel roads. My 2017 I could run 60mph down a rough gravel road if I wanted to and it would stay straight. My 2019 was scary on gravel at first and I would notice it even on bumps on the highway. I have since leveled my truck and put airbags on the back axle and it seems better than it used to be, but I may have gotten used to it to in the 12k miles I have put on it. GM must not have tested off the highway much with these trucks.

Where are you guys getting Bilsteins for the rear?    I can’t find em anywhere.   I desperately want shocks for the rear.  2019 Silverado

My 2020 rides just like that paved roads.  I can get the rear to step out on just regular roads. Hell it will do it on a Interstate.  I haven't taken it down the washboard dirt road yet.  Already know the outcome.

I was probably the first one to report it.. RST wasn't that common when I first got it.. and got picked on left and right from GM fanboys.
 

I was so pissed over it. Fortunately, other RST Z71 and Elevation X31 owners are reporting the same thing. I was shocked it could actually keep sliding sideways with the wild shuddering and I had to slam my brakes.

Bilsteins 5100s are the way to go. The front end stays planted to the road but the back end was a completely different story. The F-150 I had before that would have all four tires bobbing up and down, but at least all four were the same so it never fishtailed.

The comments from those who couldn't dish it are why I have over 20 members here blocked.

The only thing that helped the ride and control in such situations was adding a Hellwig Big Wig anti-sway bar at the rear axle. No change in ride with a heavy load in the bed but when the bed was empty there was a lot of wheel hop before adding the Big Wig.

 

If shocks were the problem it would be evident with irregular tire wear. If you have a bad shock it should be evident if you bounce on the corners of the truck and compare the results. I have had GM and Mercedes shocks fail after as few as 20,000 miles.

i believe the 2018 rears are same and fit new model.....its the fronts that are different

There is now a 5100 for the front but no one has it yet. Part # for the front will be Part Number: 24-293297. The rear is Part Number: 24-293471.

Did you drive it yet? Was there an actual difference or do you believe that it is more in your mind?

BlancoSilverado: I think my truck rides a little better with the Bilsteins. The 5100s react faster which keeps the tires in contact with the road surface, i.e., less bounce.

Did you install the sway bar yourself? Seems pretty straightforward from the instructions on their website...

2019 Sierra Elevation 4x4.

Have a levelling kit and LT275/65R20 BF Goodrich KO2 tires set at 42 PSI.

My truck also has the Max Trailering/NHT option with stock shocks.

I definitely get a lot of bounce or “bunny hoping when going over bumps like the back end bounces sideways.

My last truck 07 Silverado Z71 didn’t do this.

I find it annoying for sure at times and my wife really notices it while in the truck.

 

We did a camping trip a pulled our 24’ trailer and it towed beautifully.  No bouncing once loaded but when driving the truck down a dirt road without the trailer there was quite a bit of bouncing around!

I guess having high payload and towing capacity comes at a cost!

they dont spend alot of money or time on stock suspension....its one of many parts that have to meet a pricepoint and still work.....so any reputuable shock should be better than OEM....

I added a double leaf set of Supersprings to my truck and so the wheel hop was quite noticeable when hitting a pothole or rut or expansion joint on an overpass. What fixed the problem was adding a Hellwig Big Wig rear anti sway bar to the rear axle. Anti sway bars will cause a road shock at one wheel to be transmitted to the opposite wheel which is usually viewed as a negative aspect of their use but on a truck it means that a good portion of the shock from the wheel hitting the pothole is shared by the opposite wheel.

 

I added the Big Wig in an effort to reduce roll with a 3700 lb camper in the bed and for this it made no improvement. Later when I had the camper off the truck and the bed more or less empty other than the weight of a fiberglass cap I soon noticed the improved ride. Not cheap at $450 but it took only an hour of my time to attach it and did so with the truck's wheels on the ground. I now consider a rear anti-sway bar as a must have on my pickups.

    • probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
