I've had my new 22 refresh AT4 diesel for a couple hundred miles and thought I'd post the few things I've noticed different about it versus my previous 2020 AT4 diesel. These are things I've noticed different before I get too used to them and forget what the old truck was like! The two trucks are optioned nearly the same (CarbonPro, 3.0, same options) except the wheels/tires. The 22 has 18" Duratrac MT and the 2020 had 20" GY Trailrunner AT.

 

1. The 22 is missing the passive door lock/unlock buttons on the exterior rear door handles. I assume this is due to the chip/parts shortage but still find it odd. Wish they had them - I find it useful in parking lots when I want to put something in the back seat first.

2. The 22 has chrome exhaust outlet trim surround where the 2020 AT4 CarbonPro had matte black trim. I prefer the matte black. 

3. The 22 seems to have less noise in the cab, like it has more sound insulation. 

4. The 22 Bose stereo sounds a little better than the 2020 Bose

5. I am getting better MPG in the same drive cycle in the 22 than the 2020. It is still new so not enough miles to really know if there is a difference yet.

6. The transmission seems to shift slightly smoother in the 22 and seems to hold gears more before downshifting versus the 2020. Small but noticeable difference. Might be the trans still learning since it is still new, but I like the 22 better so far. 

7. The 2020 AT4 had a sport mode, the 22 does not. 

8. The 2020 AT4 temp gauge would move up above 210 sometimes as the computer was controlling water temp to various parts of the engine. This freaked some people out when the 3.0 diesel came out but it is normal operation. I have not seen the 22 temp gauge fluctuate the same way. I bet GM masked that so not to worry people that it is overheating.

9. The 22 diesel has a slightly longer crank time than my 2020 diesel. My 2020 never suffered from the crank but no start issue, so I never had it flashed. I understand the revised programming lengthened the crank time slightly. Small but noticeable. I prefer the 2020.

10. The 22 auto-start/stop is less aggressive than the 2020. The 20 would stop the engine much more often. 

11. The center console in the 22 seems smaller than the 20 even though they look like they are the same size. Maybe I just don't have my stuff organized yet!

12. The 22 has the button for all 4 windows down at the same time, the 2020 did not. I like that, but wish I could push it up to roll them all up too. 

 

Of course, the 22 interior and tech is vastly improved. That makes it feel like an entirely different truck to me. My old 2020 was the best truck I've ever owned and so far I like the 22 even more. The only thing I might do different is skip the 18" Duratracs - they are already noisier than I like and I don't need the aggressive off-road tire. That's a relatively easy fix with some different tires though.

It's not. It's simply a cost-cutting measure. The 2019 Silverados had the buttons on all four handles, they were deleted for 2020. Well before any of the chip shortage/supply chain issues started. Us GMC guys were lucky enough to keep them through the '22 LTD, but now our time has come. :(

Yeah I have noticed even the Fords will not have buttons on back. Sucks but oh well. Good write up OP.

The passive door handles for the rear is probably the only thing that I miss.

Thanks for the write up.  Is there rear window the same crappy design that is guaranteed to leak eventually?  Hard to believe GM let that go on more than one year, let alone 6 years when this design (normally) runs its course.

Thanks for the write up OP. I've got a 20' AT4 3.0 CP truck just like the one you got rid of.

 

I have to agree with you on the black matte exhaust surrounds and the 20 CP gray wheels.

I think I like the front end better on mine vs. the refreshed model as well.

 

The interior though is no contest. They really did a fantastic job on the new trucks.

How many miles were on the 20 when you traded it?

 

I just traded in my 2021 Silverado 3.0 with 33000 miles for a 2022 refresh. The engine in the new one is WAY quieter.

1. Simple cost cutting measure by GM. They did it on the Silverado's in 2020.

2. You can buy the black tips from GM or have your chrome ones powder coated.

3. Agreed. I had a 2020 Silverado RST, a 2021 GMC AT4, and now the refresh 2022 Silverado LTZ. The GMC AT4 had less cab noise than the 2020 Silverado, but the 2022 LTZ has even less than the AT4. I think my reduction in noise may be due to the AT4 had the 20" mud tires and not the all-terrain tires. The 2022 does seem to have less noise than the 2020 though.

4. The Bose does sound good in the 2022, but I can't for the life of me find the speed adjusted volume setting. I do think the bass in the 2021 AT4 hit a little harder than the 2022.

5. All 3 of mine were the 3.0. The 2020 RST averaged 25 mpg in the city and 29-30 on the highway (it had the 18" wheels and 31" tires). The 2021 AT4 did the worse, obviously, but still got in the 20-25 range consistently. The 2022 LTZ has only been on 1 trip in the 2,8xx miles it has on it. It did very well averaging 27. The 2021 AT4 and the 2022 LTZ have both had the S&B intake and the PPE turbo resonator delete on them.

6. I feel the same way about the 2022 transmission. It does seem to hold gears longer and seems to shift a tad harder than the other 2 trucks.

7. My 2021 AT4 had Sport Mode (built in August 2021), but I saw that the later built AT4's didn't have Sport Mode.

8. The temp gauge on the dash is really just a dummy gauge. They haven't been accurate since the mid-90's.

9. The longer crank is the "fix" for the crank no start issues that plagued the 2021+ models. My 2022 LTZ does the same thing. That was the first thing I noticed when I drove the 2022.

10. Get the Autostop Eliminator (https://www.autostopeliminator.com/collections/gm/products/2019-silverado-sierra-autostop-eliminator). It is worth it. I don't like the Start/Stop on any vehicle. 

11. The storage compartment in the center console is smaller than the pre-refresh trucks. The console itself is the same physical size.

12. This was on some of the 2022 models. It seems like it is hit or miss for when GM puts this in the trucks. You can also roll all the windows down by holding down the unlock button on the key fob, if you've turned it on in the settings, even if you don't have the button on the dash.

 

The only thing that some people have a problem with in the refresh interior is it does require the data plan to have the built in Google Maps operate. That doesn't bother me as I do pay for the data plan.

 

The only complaint I have with my 2022 LTZ refresh is the wheels. I like the polished LTZ wheels on the 2019-2022 LTD's. The wheels now look almost exactly like the Custom 20" wheels. I'm hoping to find a set of 2019-2021 LTZ wheels that are polished to swap out, as long as they are not that expensive.

Both my 21 AT4 that I traded and my current 22 AT4 have sport mode.

    • When I bought my 14 GMC I turned it off with an handheld programmer. With my 16 Odyssey I left it on solely because I didn’t have much money in the vehicle. There’s a device to turn it off that’s a little more involved. The GMC at 72 MPH the deactivation was on very little the deference was 1/2 mile per gallon. The Odyssey is on over half the time at 72 mph. 
    • Anyone ever thought about switching the interior door panels from the base model to the Denali style? I’ve seen that you basically have to cut, sand, mold, paint, the window switches together to get the look right. Is that the main reason people don’t bother doing the swap? Seems like the only method that is easy I guess, without having to mess around with wiring and stuff.
    • Replace the fuel pump with an OEM AC-Delco.
    • Hello, first time posting here. I have an 03 Chevy 1500HD with the 6 liter gas engine. The truck ran fine until the fuel pump died on me and had to get it towed. Replaced the fuel pump with a precision pump from O’rileys and changed the fuel filter while I was there. The truck will run and drive now but it wants to idle around 500 rpm when in drive and it tries to stall if you touch the gas. It drives fine though, just doesn’t want to idle. Put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail and only have 50 psi. I guess these trucks should have 55-62 psi to run right. I thought the regulator might be the issue because when I would unplug the vacuum hose it jumped to 56 psi. Replaced the regulator and no change. The only thing I can think of is that I was sold a faulty fuel pump. Any help would be appreciated because I’d rather not have to take the bed off again if I don’t have too. Thank you!
    • I've been wrenching on GM trucks for 17 years. And I need to get something off my chest because it's been weighing on me for a long time. After all that time, all those motors, all those people standing in my bay, I've figured out there are really only two kinds of owners. The ones who already know about this. And the ones who are about to find out the hard way. A guy came into my shop a few weeks back in a 2018 Silverado 5.3. Sharp guy, maybe 35. Knew his truck cold. He'd been on the forums, read the threads, done his homework. He only rolled in so I could double-check a little module he'd already plugged in himself. Wanted a second set of eyes on it. Ten minutes, in and out, drove off happy. Two days later, a completely different story walked through the same door. Older fella this time, in a 2016 Sierra. Gorgeous truck, clearly babied, not a scratch on it. Wedding ring. Looked like a guy who took care of his stuff. He was in because his engine had started knocking on the way to work. And by the time I got the valve cover off, I already knew it was too late. Lifter collapsed. Cylinder 5. Camshaft chewed up. The whole top end shot. Same kind of truck. Same motor. Same roads, probably the same dealer. The only thing separating those two men was information. I've been at this since 2008, and I've worked on everything GM puts out. Silverados. Sierras. Tahoes. Yukons. Suburbans. Escalades. The 5.3 and the 6.2. Doesn't matter which badge is on the tailgate. They all carry the same problem. So here's the information one of those guys had and the other one didn't. It's called Active Fuel Management. AFM. GM started building it into their V6s and V8s back in 2007 to squeeze out a little better mileage on the highway. Maybe a mile or two a gallon. All to hit government fuel economy numbers. The way it works, the motor quietly shuts down half its cylinders when you're just cruising along. And the little lifters that pull that off have a tiny pin inside them that's constantly clicking in and out. Lock, unlock, lock, unlock. Hundreds of times a drive. Thousands of times a week. Eventually one of those pins wears through. The lifter drops. And it starts grinding the camshaft down like a chisel on butter. And what nobody tells you is that the shudder you feel around 40 or 50 mph? That's the system cycling. Every single time. Here's what really gets me. The pre-2007 trucks, the ones without AFM, they're bulletproof. I've got customers still daily driving them with 260,000 miles on the odometer. Not a problem in the world. GM took a perfectly good motor that would have lasted a lifetime and bolted this system onto it. And it is wrecking engines that should have run forever. The guys who hang around the forums already know all of this. So do the techs. They handled this years ago. They didn't sit around waiting for the dealership to mail them a warning letter, because that letter is never coming. It's the guys who figured somebody would've told them who end up on my lift. And I want to be clear, because this part matters. Maintenance has nothing to do with it. I've torn down motors with barely 30,000 miles on the clock. I pulled apart a Tahoe last summer with 24,000 on it. Practically a brand new truck. Owner had it less than a year. Spotless oil. Best synthetic money can buy, changed early every time. Made no difference. I've seen guys with full dealer records, every interval stamped. Made no difference. The oil changes were never the problem. The pin was. And no amount of babying that truck stops that pin from cycling every single time you drive. That's the part that eats at me. These are good motors. Take the AFM out of the equation and a 5.3 or a 6.2 will run 300,000 miles and never blink. So a few years ago I started telling every single owner who comes through my doors the exact same thing the smart guys already knew. Get yourself a FullForce disabler. It plugs right into the port under your dash. Couple of seconds and you're done. It just tells the computer to leave every cylinder running, full time. No more cycling. No more beating those lifters back and forth every time you turn the key. It doesn't reprogram anything. Doesn't touch your tune. And unplug it before a dealer visit and there's absolutely zero trace it was ever installed. I've had customers come back at 40,000, 60,000, 80,000 miles after I put one in. Zero issues. The trucks run smoother. And the lifters aren't getting beaten to death every single drive. I won't sit here and tell you it's magic. A lifter that's already damaged is a lifter that's already damaged, and this won't un-ring that bell. But it takes away the one thing causing all that wear in the first place. That's the whole game. You don't need a five-thousand-dollar delete. You don't need an expensive tune. You don't need to tear anything apart. You just need to stop the cycling. I'm not writing this for any company. I'm writing it because I'm tired of watching the guys who didn't know pay four and five figures for it. I'm tired of being the guy who has to break the news. I'm tired of knowing that the guys who did know fixed the whole thing for the price of a tank of gas, and the only difference was that somebody told them first. If you drive a Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, or Escalade from 2007 or newer with a V6 or V8, you've got AFM. You've got those lifters, and they're cycling every single time you drive. So be the guy who already knew. Not the one I'm scraping metal out of next month. EDIT: A bunch of folks asked, so here it is. The one I put my faith in is FullForce.
