GM to recall hd's for tailgate dropping...

If the holes were necessary for draining water from the handle, maybe have tubing connected to nipples below the holes to drain out of the bottom of the tailgate. Then they probably would make the tubing to small to drain properly and freeze!

Edit: I got the idea from my boat. It has various recessed areas with a hole for draining when it rains or taking wave with a rubber or plastic piece with tubing running to the bilge.

Mine started doing the random opening by itself last year. At some point it must have burnt out the button on the tailgate that opens it and it quit opening. I've just left it that way since I don't have to worry about random opening and just use my key fob or dash button to open it until they release an actual fix.

Received my letter today in the mail, though I'm not sure what the point of the letter is if they don't have a fix for it. I'd like to get a replacement button and just block the holes up, but I'm afraid that'll void them fixing it under the recall.

That logically makes no sense. Stopping water from blatantly leaking onto sensitive electrical connections could lead to them not fixing the problem that was caused by the thing you did to stop it?
The design team that thought that up should be fired. Very dumb people.

It states it’s due to water getting into the tailgate and possibly creating a short circuit. Hmmm, wonder how the water is getting in? It’s almost as if they purposely drilled two holes right over the switch assembly.

Just for the heck of it, I’ll be setting up my cargo net right inside the tailgate so in the very off chance it drops, nothing can come out.

The first batch of recall is to cut the wires unless the customer declines. That's the current fix until the parts supply is established.

The tailgate won't work from the button, but can still be opened from the dash button or the key fob (if applicable).

My brother was in for an oil change on his 2023 Denali 3500.......

They said there was an open recall and were going to disable the release switches on his tailgate.......my brother told them to pound-sand. How stupid is that to disable the switches so you need to go into the cab or use a stupid remote.

Geez, GM wake up and fix the damn problem, not disable switches on a $75K truck!

I've heard nothing on my 2023 Silverado High Country 1500 about a tailgate recall as of yet......

NHTSA requires like 80% of parts to be available to do a recall. It's going to take a little time to make 300,000 parts.

Kinda makes me wonder who greenlights some of this stupid stuff. The gauge package always comes to mind when thinking about engineering failures along with the issue of the voltage backfeed problems when towing a trailer with solar. It shows me they werent listening to the serious adults and instead took the advice of the Art history major they hired for the engineering team.

I fixed mine with 2 round head push pins (we always called them Christmas tree pins) I clipped the head on one side so it fit against the wall on the back of the recess and then put silicone on the hole and then pushed them in. It almost looks OEM and you would never know it wasnt unless you knew about the issue. I dont care if a little water pools on the handle, it blows right out once you drive.

Finally received my letter a few weeks ago.

I called dealer and no parts/repair yet available. They said another letter will follow when parts/repair is available.

Never an issue with tailgate dropping randomly...but I'm in SoCal so not as much rain as other parts of the country. Plus its garaged during inclement weather. But it does get wet when I was it every couple of weeks.

Just picked up my 2024 GMC Denali today. Tailgate works properly. Did not implement that temp fix to disable buttons on the tailgate. Maybe mine has the final fix.

So I just received the follow up letter in the mail and the parts are now available and I’m dropping my truck off tomorrow to have the new parts installed.

I also let them know that I want the rear leaf spring clunking sound figured out.

I gave them the bulletin @newdude provided and what a surprise they said my vin is not linked with that. Well I said the truck has clunking rear leaves so they need to be fixed. So we shall see how that goes.

in other news I changed the oil and greased the zerks. 8 quarts out still. So that’s good.

but I will end with a picture of the demon zerk. Just for fun. This one is such a pita to get to. This pic shows the only way I was able to get it. Those hoses are almost in the way.

Technical Service Bulletins are usually not VIN specific. They address issues that can occur usually for a model year range. Special coverages (aka extended part warranties) are something that would be VIN specific, recalls are attached to VINs, etc.

So that was a line of BS they fed you. We've done a few of these trucks for the clunk bulletin.

Thank you dude. I will be using this ammo tomorrow. It was some service appt taker on the phone. She also told me they had to order the parts for the recall and it would be 2-4 weeks. I got a call from another service person that said the parts came in for the recall. That was an hour later ha! Guess that first girl needs a bit more training.

Next time you go to do that one get an assortment of 90 degree fittings and replace it.

I dont recall the thread of the fitting, they changed them at some point because the stash I had of them from before wouldnt work and I had to buy more.
