It doesn’t take as expert to see that wasn’t a good move. If you were going down that hill and placed your wheels differently maybe if there was an emergency. If that was a high flow ditch that removed soft material maybe doable. I wouldn’t had chance it especially how sensitive environments can be.

You may also want to do some mileage checks to see how far a tank of gas will take you pulling the new trailer.

You will get farther with the diesel if you go places where range between stops is an issue like boondock camping.

I doubt it, probably going to be around 9 MPG regardless of engine choice.

The perception of the gasser needing to be at the rev limiter isnt very accurate. I just came through AL, GA and TN in late March. I dont think I ever had the throttle to the floor. I typically run around 65 which seems to be the sweet spot for RPM and pulling power (around 2050 RPM)

If your familiar with the short  grade on NB I-75 between Chattanooga and Cleveland TN where it climbs back onto the mountain,  I will use that as an example. I hit the hill doing 65, slowed going up to around 60 and maneuvered around a couple of trucks that had slowed. I ended up in 5th gear IIRC while climbing with the RPM somewhere around 3500. Not exactly screaming up the hill and still leaving throttle available.

In a perfect world I would love a L5P for the torque. We all know the world is imperfect. I ran the numbers several times on this 3000 miles of towing. With the price difference between gas and diesel and the mileage difference I always came out cheaper and thats without factoring DEF. My cost per mile is always less, I saved 10k on the truck, I save on maintenance costs (I always do my own so the costs are minimal) AND I could likely buy a new long block L8T for what a set of diesel injectors cost.

It all comes down to your driving habits and your experience with heavily laden trucks. Only you can decide whats comfortable and what isnt.

If your looking for comparison watch the TFL truck videos of the Ike gauntlet. They have towed heavy with an L5P and an L8T in this truck. Compare the 2.

Scott

If you were climbing at 60 mph at around 3500 rpm in an L8T with the 6L90, you were in 3rd gear. The truck climbs great in that gear at 60 - quiet and smooth.

This example was with my 2024. With the 6L90 there was no indicator showing the gear it was in. I agree on the 6 spd though.

So my foot is to the floor trying to get up to 60 to merge safely with traffic.  That is a struggle with my truck only towing 8k.  I'm thinking towing 15k trying to merge will be a disaster...

Wow.  That does not sound normal to me with only 8k LBs.

You need to definitely get a diesel if you are about to double the weight of your trailer.

Diesel dually if you can afford it.

I can now while I'm working.  Retirement is a different subject.  And I really don't want a dually.  I've never had one, never had any desire for one, and I think a SRW 3500 will be plenty in a diesel.  Heck my 2500 gasser is plenty when it comes to the numbers, (payload and towing) but when it comes to real world towing...that's my issue.

I had to retire at 52 from flying. Pissed me off. Cost me $ millions in retirement. Think through that as your seniority should allow a near retired lifestyle at Delta while bringing the $$.

There's a lot that happened back in 2005 when Delta went bankrupt.  They froze our retirement.  I had 18.5 years up to that point so my retirement will be crap.  I remember when Delta merged with Western back in 87 right when I hired in.  They all got screwed.  I remember when Delta bought PanAm in 91.  They all got screwed too.  Apparently most of us got screwed unless you work for the government.  Yay for them!

I get it. Try leaving 13 years early.

Did the operator try rocking in the seat, while digging it in deeper? Bet he could've gotten out! 🫣

I've seen stuff. It just amazes me how people think. Well, don't think.

As a retiree that worked for a local municipality I can say with confidence that we also got screwed several times. The same headhunter corporate consultants that work for companies also contract to municipalities. Turns out all those contracts we bargained in good faith werent worth the paper they were printed on. In this society you have only what you can hold in your hand (and even then who knows) there is no one that can be trusted.

What is that logo on a dollar bill?

The one person that can be trusted is ignored or denied.

Just say'n.

48 YO with experience on prepared roads. First jump into mountain rough stuff. Judgment on this checkride was a failing grade of course.   When one is hung up with a CAT 140M2 AWD you stop digging in.

Give me a track hoe and I'll get both of them out. The maintainer is going to have to be dug out at the back end to facilitate removal.

What genius thought the FE loader was going to do anything?

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
