01 Suburban speedometer stuck

Changed the fuel filter out today and when I cranked her up for the first time I heard some noise behind the dash and then noticed the speedometer was pinned at max speed (I was sitting still in Park).

 

From what I have been able to find out through searching this forum is that the guage clusters have a known problem of sticking...or at least that is what it appears. Is this true? Could I have tripped something by removing the Fuel Pump Relay in the fuse and relay box under the hood?

Nevermind, found a fix.

 

I used a small zip tie-- put it in the hole in the dash for the trip and odometer reset and flicked the pin back to zero. Drove around and it seems to be working just fine.

It probably won't be the last time. My 05 Sierra started doing the same thing plus other symptoms, like the needle dropping but not increasing or vice versa. Can be very dangerous if mixed with cruise control.

 

I was on the highway with the cruise set and I hit a hill. The grade was a bit shallow but very long. The speed dropped to about 90 so the cruise accelerated, and kept accelerating. After about a half minute I looked in the rear view and the traffic that had been right behind me was a half kilometer back! I look at the GPS and the speed says 130! Speedo still said 90. If I slowed the needle would drop, but when I hit the gas it didn't move. Had to pull over, shut the truck off, and reset the needle.

 

Other times if I let the truck idle for any length of time the needle will pin itself in a random spot. I have a photo of the speedo registering 190 but at 1000 RPM, but otherwise works as normal up or down. Very annoying because if I restart the truck it only drops the needle like 20 km/h so if it's set really high, I need to stop and start the truck five, ten, fifteen times to get it to zero!!

 

I'm having it taken in this week. Of course no recall, and out of warranty, so I'm preparing my wallet for the hurt. If its too much I might see if a wrecker has an IPC I can rip out, I believe all the mileage info is stored in the BCM so it ought to be a straight swap.

Bought a 2000 Suburban LT last weekend after test driving a 3 or 4 of them. All of them seemed to have slightly jerky speedometer needles.
