What mirrors? I have a nice set of DL8's on my garage shelf

I believe DL3s as they are supposed to fold, i could hear the gear trying to go but nothing happening.

I find it so odd that a clean 00-02 still attracts me way more than any gmt900 ever could, and than the K2's currently do.

 

I see a well kept black 99-02 Silverado every 2 weeks that looks identical to mine but in black and its just so beautiful.

 

Ultimately I would love to have the $$$$ and time to restore an 02 with a 3.73 rear end and the 5.3, although adding a tuned 6.0 is really tempting. It would basically be OEM+ in that I would keep it as original as possible but improve on things like the suspension, engine and tranny tuning, etc. Although e-fans, 34" radiator, and 06+ front brakes would also be added.

The evap solenoid won't be hard to fix. Is it the evap cannister vent solenoid?

The only thing I can say different is 00-07 (Classic). The 900s kind of grew on me, but nearly as much as any of the older 800s. I think they made the perfect set up in my opinion in my '06. Haven't seen one yet that I like better.

New here so thought I'd chime in a say hi.

 

So, what year GMT-800 do you have? 1999 GMC Sierra SLT Z-71 Stepside
What motor/trans? 5.3L Vortec/ 4L60E
What have you had to fix? Water pump.
What do you still need to fix? Drivers seat is splitting around the belt opening.

How many miles do you got on the clock? 99,300 as of this morning

This is the longest I've ever owned the same vehicle. I bought her in 2001 with 20k on the clock for 20k. Factory heated leather, recovery hooks, fogs, skid plate. Over the years I've done a few things...

Changed out the headlights to projector housings (with a proper cutoff) and HID.

Stainless step bars.

Borla cat back with dual stainless out the back.

Infinity Basslink sub under back seat, all speakers replaced with MB Quart, JVC head unit. Nothing extravagant, just very good quality sound was my goal.

Escalade cluster which looks much better and adds the trans temp. Also had that programmed to my original mileage.

Converted all the switch and cluster lighting to red.

Tint on front door windows to match stock rear tint.

In channel rain guards.

K&N filter.

Remote start.

Have always run synthetic blend oil in her.

About 75k did a major service which included the diff, trans case, transmission, full tune up with new OEM Delco wires and plugs. Also fully flushed the cooling system during that and separatly and carefully flushed the heater core both ways - wow a lot of crap builds up in that! The heat was doubled after that!

Semi stupid tail lights - the originals were getting rough and there are very few options for the stepsides and I hate the ricer looking crap.

Fold-a-Cover bed cover and BedRug liner.

2" Rough Country leveling kit and new shocks. Did not go crazy cranking the keys or anything.... I run 285's on the stock wheels.

Recently just overhauled the brakes. Rebuilt all 4 calipers, new rear rotors (the stupid shoe in hat ebrake had destroyed in inside of the hat), fully flushed the old fluid out, all new ceramic pads. Ebrake works great now! :)

I have a graphics business so I have wrapped it a couple of times over the years. Had matte black before matte black was cool - back then everyone just though it was primer.... lol. Now its 2 tone brushed metallic.

I have always strived to make sure any mods like electrical are done to OEM spec. No scotchlok crap, wires are loomed, etc.

Newest thing I'm about to have a go at (still collecting all the parts) is to convert it to 2005/2006 cooling and efans. Also doing it right using all oem components. So far I've aquired the stock additional relay block that mounts to the side of the underhood fuse box under the support braket as well as the wiring harness bits. Also have the dual fans. Still need to get the larger radiator and part of the project will also be upgrading the 105a alternator to the 145a one. The final step to this will be the PCM part, I need to get the software modified to enable the 2 pins for stock control of the fans. The problem on mine is the one pin currently triggers the AC recirculation door. So I'm trying to figure if there is a way I can still have that function in some way (maybe mod the switch on the AC controls to trigger a relay to turn the AC recirculation on/off of something or maybe convert it to a later PCM) if I change that output on the PCM to the cooling fan control. I like the idea of using all the stock components though since it all bolts right on and will eliminate the clutch fan.

Of course over the years run of the mill fixes like replacing the window motors, assorted bulbs, crappy fog lights that the lenses eventually fall out of, ac door repair, etc.. I'd love to convert the front to a 2003+ style with the round fogs but that is a pricey upgrade since you have to replace the bumper, bumper brackets have to be modified, lower skirt, grille, and corner lights. Lot of $$$ and work for fog lights.

New here so thought I'd chime in a say hi.

 

 

Same here! I've been a member here for a while but I normally just lurk and learn!

Your post prompted me to share my GMT800 journey.

 

I have a 2003 Extended Cab Short bed that I bought in 2004 with 24K miles on the clock. It now has 306K and climbing!

It has been my daily driver, day in and day out for 10 years. It has made all of the vacation trips as our kids were growing up and it did everything I ever asked it to do without failing me, every time!

I love that dang truck!

 

Alas, as you can imagine... She's getting a little long in the tooth. I've done 100% of the maintenance myself in my own garage with common tools.

 

I'll recap her long and storied history here:

 

First off, The biggest issue I ever had was some coolant that was leaking into the oil at about the 220K mile mark. It was originally a 4.8L, so rather than dealing with a potential castech head issue, or blown head gasket or trying to track down and repair the problem on an already high mileage engine, I bought a 5.3L from the local salvage yard. Out with the old and in with the new (to me!). Yes, I guess you could view this as a failure or weakness in the GMT800 platform... But I'm a glass half full kind of dude. There are so dang many of theses things out there that they are easy to find and they are VERY affordable.

AND they are all the same, so the swap was a piece of cake. If this one ever falters, I'll do the exact same thing again!

 

Other than that, its all been what I would expect to be regular "wear" items after 300K + miles of use...

Over the years I've replaced the following:

Fuel pump, water pump, brakes, rotors, shocks, alternator, power steering pump, front hubs/bearings, A/C compressor, knock sensors, cam position sensor, spark plugs/wires, battery, tires, fluids and filters...

She starts and runs and goes every time!

 

With that being said, I've had the itch to get an old truck to hot rod up a bit...

I've also had the itch to get one of them shiny new fangled trucks...

I also refuse to go into debt to have either of those...

 

So there in lies the dilemma... I've made the resolution this year to satisfy those two itches with my ole GMT800.

The way I see it, I can make a truck payment to myself and then buy the parts when the money is there.

 

So my 2015 GMT800 wish list is as follows.

 

Have the rear end re-geared.

Right now, it is an untouched open 3.42:1. I have a good local shop that will do the work on this one, its definitely out of my league. I have chosen a 4 clutch posi type unit and 4.11:1 ring and pinion. Will also replace axle bearings and seals at the same time. Probably replace u-joints as well.

 

Have the 4L60E rebuilt.

Same shop will do this work. Again, aside for fluid and filter changes, this is the original transmission. I'll likely be going with a Monster transmissions "Mega Monster in a box" rebuild kit.

 

Valve train upgrade

Comp Cams K54-424-11 kit that includes cam, lifters, valve springs, retainers, lock and seals. Add new pushrods and some adjustable rocker arms. Will also likely replace the timing chain and oil pump at this time. I'll also get a list of mods to BlackBear and have them do a custom tune. I would also LOVE to convert it to the larger radiator and e-fans.

 

Appearance upgrade

Some of the clear coat is starting to peal on the roof. So a repaint will be the last on the list. Still kicking around paint schemes and ideas. Probably wont decide what to do until the day before it gets painted. I already have the shackles to drop the rear 2". Just need to put them on. And of course new wheels and tires. Nothing outlandish... but something a little cooler than the 16" steelies that are on it.

 

Long story, short... I think it will make for an even more awesome-er truck. It will have all the get up and go I want and will (eventually) look good doing it.

I'd love to hear any input that y'all may have! Attached is a picture as she sits right now!

This thread gave me the motivation (as well as the 60+ degree temps outside today) to get off my arse and put my rear drop shackles in.

I used McGaughys 2" drop shackles (33037) that I bought back in November...

I've been having a random no start / no crank condition that was getting worse on cold mornings, so I got that sorted out (it turned out to be the starter).

I also changed the oil, So I'm enjoying a much deserved beer!

The sun went down before I got the chance to wash it, but the high tomorrow is supposed to be 61, so I'll get it then.

Got her cleaned up today, gotta LOVE this southern weather! I think the 2" rear drop is just about right!

My previous '06 was around the same as kstruckcouontry's. Actually it was a little more since mine was a crew cab. If I recall it came in at 5800lbs. I had to weigh it when I drove down from Alaska with the truck.

How could yours be so heavy? Is that including your front anchor? lol

Yeah 4x4 and hunkasteel. The bumper only weighs about 150 pounds though.

Now that 4300 pounds is dry weight. No fluids or any of that. My 2wd weighs 5400 with me in it and road ready including my tool box

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
