Max spare tire size?

Hi all,

New member here. Just bought an '04 2500HD 4x4 yesterday.

Has anyone successfully fitted a 315/70R17 (35") tire in stock location between frame rails? Searched around for a bit and didn't have any luck.

Thanks!

I had a 35/12.5/17(or 18) on my 06 1500HD. They JUUUUUUSSSSTTTT fit.

Edit: I did have a hitch on it too.

This is good to hear. Thank you.I will do a test fit. If it fits I will post a pic or two.

The only tme you would need a spare to exactly fit the other four tires is if you need to be in 4WD on hard dirt surfaces. In 2WD I doubt the limited slip differential would be affected and you could put a front tire on the rear and the spare in the front tire location. The odds of having a rear tire puncture under those conditions are pretty slim.

The difference in the specs for the tire height are based on zero load on the tire. The height of the 285/70R17 tires on my truck with a full load the same height as the stock 245/75/17 tires with nothing in the bed. Worked out well as with a load my speedometer and odometer are dead on.

The spare tires used on many cars have been a great deal smaller than the standard size tires used on the primary wheels and designed for driving the car at 55 MPH to the nearest shop.

If it is critical to have the exact same size spare tire there are tire mounts that bolt to the inside of the bed that would work.

I finally made some time to buy a tire. I bought a 315/75-16 (shown below) mounted on the stock steel wheel. Tire fits just fine.
Tire cost $50 at a local used tire store.
Thanks all for the help.
