I was specifically referring to the installation instructions. Motofab is a top down bolt installation and requires you to drop your ball joints to clear the CV axle during install. it sounds like RC is bottom up. Also RC is cast steel and Motofab is machined aluminum.

 

I can only speak to the accuracy of the Motofab info I'm posting as I don't have the RC.

I have the rough country 2" with stamped steel. It is also top down and requires you to drop the ball joints to install. My truck is 4wd also. Might be part of the issue.

The RC lower 2" spacer is composite, not steel and the only reason one bolt needs to go from the bottom up is because the half shaft is in the way to prevent the longer bolt from being inserted from the top. I dropped the upper ball joint on one side while installing but couldn't get the other side to release. On the side I dropped, I still couldn't get the bolt in through the top. It doesn't make any difference anyway as long as they're torqued properly to 37 ft lbs. One guy pulled his axle to get the bolts in from the top but it's fine putting them in the other way. Sorry to keep asking questions. I don't see any pics of the trimmed carpet on this forum from yesterday, or the past few days. I even searched your name. Sorry if I sound like a stalker. Are they posted somewhere else?

 

I agree, I'm shocked too to hear it rubs, even if just a little. Not what I've been reading about 275 60 20's. With the trimming, would you do the same size tire again, or go down to stock 20's in a Duratrac?

I would definitely do it again. Biggest downer was the mpg hit... Lost 3 mpg even with the corrected speedo. I have a Diablo intune.

You don't have to pull the entire axle, just zap out the 15mm bolts holding the axles to the diff , push them aside and drop the bolts in. No need to mess with ball joints.

So I have a '17 1500 denali ultimate im planning on installing the suspension maxx 2.5 for the Magnetic ride but I was wondering what should I do with the rear and also what is the biggest tire I can use with the stock 22 wheels

I have the same vehicle. My advice is to go with the 2" level and leave the back alone. That's what I did and it looks perfect. If you go with 2.5" you will probably need to go from a 1" to 2" block in the rear, and then you will have more rake than the 2" level alone. Also with the magneride, my dealer told me it's best to stay under 2" - he said the angles start to change a bit too much once you start going bigger.

 

In terms of tires, I stuck with the factory ones. They are not bad at all - quiet, nice looking, and wearing well. You could potentially go to 295s with the 2" level and some have managed to put 305's, but the limitation will be the upper control arms and sway bars, not the height of the wheel well.

I went with the Rough Country 2" kit designed for Magneride. It comes with little brackets that you use to reposition the sensors, so that it calibrates correctly. Pics are on my profile gallery. The dealer installed it for me.

So im trying to decide between the rough country 1311 or the suspension maxx SMX-GM725M which kit will be the best

The OP (dave8699) has 22's as he has the Denali Ultimate package. In that case, I'm guessing he can go with a 33" tire but mot much bigger.

We'll stock tire is 285/45/22 that's like a 32.1/11.2/22 so the biggest tire is probably about 1inch taller and 1in wider correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't seem like it's worth changing tire for that little bit of extra tire

Yes, conservatively, I would agree with that. You might be able to squeeze more, but it just depends. There seems to be some minor variation between individual trucks too. I was originally going to go with bigger tires, and when I saw the stock setup with the level, I thought it looks great as-is. Plus, unlike on the 20's and 18's, the factory tires on the 22's are larger (285 vs 275) and really nice. They are also an AT tire, not a regular tire, so unless you plan to go mudding (unlikely with 22's and a Denali) I don't think a change of tires is needed.

 

BTW, you should look up the piping mod and do it to your truck. Some blue piping would look sick that that blue exterior. I did the grey piping on mine and it looks amazing.

    • probably won't get a response from that user, as they haven't returned to the site since making that one post.  users don't (at least I don't, and I haven't seen any setting which would notify me via say, email) get any notification other than going to this site, and checking if they got a response on their thread...
    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.
