Halogen & LED Headlight Bulb Upgrades

"""The 9011s are brighter. But if you're looking for whiter, these aren't going to make you happy"""

Just to be clear... there is no other manufacture making a "whiter" 9011 bulb? VLEDS, Putco... they don't make a whiter 9011?

I assume the 9011 Philips bulb color is like the stock color?

Thanks for all the work you've reported to us on this subject. I just ordered 9011 bulbs from Home Depot based on the improvements you noted. I would have liked a whiter bulb, but for now I need more light. Really nice photo's of the bulb mod too. Thanks for that.

Can't wait to see what you find with the Hella fog lamps. I had an external set of Hella's on my '97 Silverado and loved them. Great quality from those guys.

I just ordered some Hella Optilux Extreme White XB H16/9009, 55w, H71071292 bulbs. $31 (pair) to my door.

They should interchange in a 5202 socket and harness, from what I've read. 55w is about 30w more than the stock 5202 bulb. They could be anywhere from 1000 lumens to 1800 lumens. But more likely somewhere in the middle. So they should be somewhere around 2 1/2 to 3 times the light of a stock bulb. It might fry the reflector, but the fuse should protect the wiring. If it frys the reflector, it's 30 bucks down the tube and I'll go to a LED fixture. Seems like it's worth a shot to have a fog light that isn't like a 747 landing on the road.

Should be plug and play. I'll post more when they come in.

I called on the status of my order today...bad news. The seller said that Hella discontinued the 55w H16/5202/PS24 bulb. Hella still has the 35w replacement for them, but I'm not interested.

I have a 25w HID Guy 5000K kit for the fogs that I haven't installed, but I really don't want HID fogs. In fact, I will return or sell them.

I originally posted this in Bulb Sizes but maybe should have posted here? If the claim of 80% brigher was even half true, then the 9005 @1700 lumens would be in the 2500+ range. Has anyone used one of these in a 14 Sierra? I assume no trimming required on a 9005?

Thanks,

I ran around some last night.. the 9011 are a little better. At least my headlights are what I would now consider decent at least. My tip I read in another post ... turn down and dim the big Intellink display at night.... this does help.

Looks like those are still just 1695 lumens(http://www.eiko.com/Products.aspx?CatID=723&ProductIndex=9005CVXL2). You are just not going to find more than that out of a 9005. Brighter is just a marketing term, more like a perceived brightness. It has nothing to do with lumens.

I don't know much about projectors, but is this normal? The passenger projector looks different then the drivers side.

Looks like the bulb may be mounted a little off. or the focus point is different between the two bulbs

  • 2 weeks later...

I just got around to getting a picture. Of the Vleds headlights and fogs against a background. They look like they are a little high haven't gotten flashed by anyone but a friend driving his little Audi was in front I me and said they were way too bright. 9yne4a6y.jpg

I will try and get better pics tonight.
