CaptKev Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Did it crank when it wouldn't start? no, one click and then the cluster went black
chelmer Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 no, one click and then the cluster went black Curious what the dealer had to say about yours. You mentioned the exhaust flapper but I believe that has to do with the truck not starting/running well when cold, but not related when the starter doesn't engage.

The starter never engaged, there was a quick click inside the passenger compartment, maybe behind the dash and then black screen.
chelmer Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 The starter never engaged, there was a quick click inside the passenger compartment, maybe behind the dash and then black screen. Right on, what did dealer say when you took it in?
CaptKev Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 Right on, what did dealer say when you took it in? Really? a hammer fixed it? we never heard of this problem? we'll investigate it while we install your bed mat and give you an inspection sticker. I made them keep the truck overnite and i will meet them first thing in the morning to start the truck. It is being left outside tonite and it is going to be 2 degrees in the am. We'll see if it starts..... I'll post back with any progress tomorrow 1
pm26 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) GM is looking into starters manufactured in a certain frame to see if it is a problem on their end. And perhaps certain location like China? Edited January 24, 2014 by pm26
chelmer Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 This may be something that's been going on longer than we think. This review by autoblog.com back in July had the same problem. http://www.autoblog.com/2013/07/29/2014-gmc-sierra-review-video/
CaptKev Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 My truck is new(79 Miles on it) got it yesterday, today 0 degrees, would not start. Got out the hammer and wrapped on the exhaust and it started. There is some kind of exhaust flap i read about here that has been causing issues! On my way back to the dealer now! Not Happy Ok, left the truck at the dealer overnite outside (4 degrees), got there at 7am, hit the remote start and she fired right up! The service guy said they bolted the butterfly in the flapper valve in the open position per GM engineering. This is a temporary fix until a permanent fix can be found, also per GM engineering. I am hoping this takes care of that problem, although i still don't understand how that flapper could be the cause of the truck not starting. There are no wires to the flapper nor could i see any sensor? The truck never turned over at all, so how does the engine know not to start from a mechanical butterfly valve so far away from the engine? When i went to start it there was a click (not a starter type click) coming from under the dash area and then the cluster went black. Just don't see how the thing works. Any insight on that thing? Anyway i'm glad to have the truck back, and hopefully with no further problems! Kevin
strike1st Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I bought mine last night. this morning exact same thing. 25 miles on it...taking it back to dealership at noon...if she'll start. it was 1 degree f this morning...-1degree f now.
chelmer Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Gotta love it. Mine is going back in monday Sent from my XT1055 using Tapatalk
strike1st Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 GM told the dealership to replace my starter...anything made in December or after should be ok....we will see.
pm26 Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) If the truck will not even crank when the key is turned, this has nothing to do with the exhaust flapper valve. Edited January 25, 2014 by pm26
