Garmin maps also have lag delays in getting road changes into the map sets. Lifetime updates is a great feature, but it does not mean that the updates will have all the road changes included.

So the GM update has all the roads updated? I doubt it. My Garmin has never led me astray.

Got my letter today. All I can say is I'll pay $160.00 for this when hell freezes over!

This navigation seems to be a cash cow for GM. You should get free maps during the warranty period. I just don't see upgrading to a bigger screen with navigation is worth it for me. $1,500 plus my 4.2 unit and now the update cost for the maps where an $88 Garmin with free updates will do the same thing. A lot of money on something I would not use too much.

Sorry, what I meant to imply was that NOBODY'S maps are ever 100% up to date.

(new housing, partially completed highway route changes etc etc)

I just received and installed my updated Maps for Navigation and Weather Apps today (USB Thumb Drive). Everything went just fine :lurk:

Did it update anything else like the mylink software? Or just updated the maps?

are the updates vin specific or it doesn't matter?

Yes, they are VIN specific. They ask for the VIN on the order form.

Out of all the options purchased on my Sierra the navigation package was the the worst value of all. It sucks and after using it only I couple times I went back to using my Garmin or my phone...........

i didn't find mine bad until i let onstar expire and can't shoot the address from the smartphone app to the dash. programming an address is painful, Google nav FTW

The whining never seems to end on the GM Nav. OK, so it's not as easy to use as a Garmin...blah, blah, blah. It is what it is. It will get you to your destination if it's in there, just about the same as a Garmin.

Most of the people that opted out of the GM Nav probably opted out of a lot of other options. They didn't want it. Fine! They probably think leather seats and power adjustable pedals are a waste of money and opted out of those too. I opted out of the 6.2L.

Frankly, I'm of the desire to see the likes of Garmin to come out with a software package that puts their system into the My Link. But hell, the thing works as it is.

As for updates, just how many sources of street addresses do you really think there are?

The problem isn't the GM navigation... It's almost all of the factory navigation systems. Honda / Acura used to use Alpine and had a good system. Then they changed to Pioneer and have a very good system. Toyota's is the worst I've ever used, Ford's is a close second, and the jury is still out for me on the GM one (although, it isn't looking too good simply because it's so "clunky").

IMHO, the point of all of the complaining is less about the actual quality of the factory units and more about the fact that Garmins of the world have an excellent product offering on the cheap - why not partner with these companies to use their technology directly in-dash or to create a way to leverage your Garmin on the factory screen and using the built-in bluetooth and voice recognition?

I have a 3590LMT that I will most likely plunk down on top of the dash and use that instead of the factory system because it just works so much better for me.

I noticed the other day the freeway on/off ramps in town were completely wrong on the factory nav system. I'm gonna complain about it when I take it in for my first service visit and see if they will upgrade it under the warranty. I was wondering about the nav database upgrades and how it's done and the cost. Yeah, have to agree with some others here, I like my Garmin.

This has got me thinking......If I bought a new Silverado with GPS, should I make sure it has the newest map updates before I take delivery? How would I check the version on the truck?
