BFG All Terrain T/A KO 275/70/18 not snowflake rated?

I emailed BFGoodrich about the 275/70/18s not being severe snow rated and this is what they said.

 

Austin, there is a significant difference in snow and winter traction between the tires that do meet the RMA requirements and the ones that do not. If you can wait until March 1, 2015 to replace your tires, we will have the BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2 available in size LT275/70R18 (BFG part # 80867) that will meet the RMA requirements for severe snow conditions.

 

I may wait for the KO2s if they aren't too pricey.

I've been running BFG T/A's for 20 years in Fairbanks Alaska. I got plenty of snow and cold weather testing. I also get them siped for free at the tire shop. It gives them great grip on hard snow and ice too.

Jimbo I'm laughing to myself reading that. I'd say don't worry about snowflake ratings based off his reply!!

I have ran BFG AT KOs on:

2006 Ford ranger 31x10.5R15 - snowflake rated

2009 Ford F150 LT275/70R18 - NOT snowflake rated

1990 Ford Bronco 31x10.5R15 - Snowflake rated

2014 Chev Silverado LT285/70R17 - Snowflake rated

 

I live in Canada. I have driven all of the above vehicles on anything from ice to 1.5' (some of these trucks deeper than that) of snow. I find that there isn't a difference in deep snow (they work great), but there is on compacted snow and ice. Having said that, it isn't and "apples to apples" comparison, so YMMV.

The snowflake rating is a joke, all it means is the tire is better than the "average" M/S tire. Virtually all AT tires are better than a plain MS tire.
