So how does the oil life monitoring system sample the oil and determine when it needs changed? Or is it just based on mileage/driving habits?

The oil life system measures outside temperature, number of key cycles and engine hours. It appears to be fairly accurate based upon oil sample results. I saw an article about the process several years ago. I believe GM introduced this system in the late 1980's so it has been around a long time.

Also, Mobil 1's engine warranty has changed in recent years. In the past, Mobil 1 EP (Gold cap) was 1 year or 15,000 miles, Mobil 1 (Silver cap) was 7500 miles or 6 months, Mobil 1 Super was 5000 miles or 6 months. In my discussions with several service departments, Mobil 1 Super appears to be the most common oil used in the service department.

The new warranty restricts the oil change interval to OEM requirements or Mobil 1's requirement. In the US, OEM is always more restrictive so it provides an easy out for Mobil 1 to deny a warranty claim. They added another caveat that any aftermarket modification (think CAI, tuners, etc.) voids the warranty unless approved in writing by the manufacturer.

In any case, Mobil 1's warranty never exceeds 1 year time in service.

The OLM assumes that the oil being used is the weight and spec that GM recommends. It does not sample.

It is based on the way the vehicle is being used. Starts. temps, miles, rpm, heat/cool cycles, power levels, etc.

OM also says that low usage vehicles should have the oil changed at least once per year (and the OLM reset).

Here's the list of oil meeting the Dexos spec (there are lots of them) -- the list can be resorted by picking the names at the top of the columns.

Just follow what the owners manual says and use what ever oil meets the min. requirements by GM. I have used what ever oil is on sale or wally word brand oil and filters for 20 years now and plan to do so with this one when my last "free" oil change is done in a few months.

Our 2007 6.0l Suburban has 125k on the clock using Walmart full synthetic and a mix of filters but I started going to M1 EP oil and ac deco filters a couple years ago so I'd only need to change oil once a year. Never seen used any oil runs strong.

Most of you off the shelf oils are pretty good now a days for a standard oil change. It is going longer drain intervals is where you need a quality synthetic to provide protection.

There are several places to have your oil analyzed. Blackstone is one, Oil Analyzers is another. I use Dyson Analysis. Terry has more than 35 years of independent oil analysis interpretation and consultation work. I also like that he sends a .wav file along with the .pdf file and explains each part of the analysis to you. No simple one paragraph interpretations.

The OLM clicks of 1% for every 75 miles driven, period.

It don't give a rip what oil you have in it or what type of driving you are doing.

Anyone that thinks different, you are only fooling yourself.

You also have to change your oil at a maximum of 7,500 miles, if you want to maintain your power train warranty.

Simple as that!

I always reset my trip B for oil changes. I tend to go over and wait till the closest weekend to do mine, I've gone to about 7800 before it got to 0% oil life. I believe there is some sort of algorithm GM has in the computing of the oil life. I doubt the oil type has anything to do with it, but I know I've gone longer than 7500 before it says 0%. But I will say on average it is every 75 miles = 1%

I believe you may have went 7,800 miles. But, I also believe you were on 0% for the last 300 miles.

Not going to test it but, I don't think the OLM uses negative percentages once you hit zero either.

I have kept track of mine since day one. It clicks off 1% for every 75 miles. It doesn't matter if I did all the mileage in a trip out west in the mountains over a couple week period, or over a period where it took over 6 months to accumulate the mileage, winter or summer. It don't care.

Of course you are welcome to believe what you want, I'll believe what I have recorded.

And if you don't hit 7,500 miles in one year since the last oil change then you need to change it to keep your warranty which is my case. My last truck was a 2002 silvy and I drove it about 5k miles a year and that oil change light would usually come on between 4,800 miles and 5,300 miles. Unless GM changed something it is not entirely based on mileage but close to it.

Have an oil analysis done to decide. Twice a year is probably good

For an oil change???

Hopefully not.

The analysis is to help decide interval for your driving conditions. Analysis is how all of our fleet vehicles, heavy equipment are maintained
