5th Oil Change?

So how does the oil life monitoring system sample the oil and determine when it needs changed? Or is it just based on mileage/driving habits?

I changed my oil / filter at 1k miles without resetting the oil monitor (at 83%)

the monitor continues to go down at the same rate it was before.

Most of you off the shelf oils are pretty good now a days for a standard oil change. It is going longer drain intervals is where you need a quality synthetic to provide protection.

There are several places to have your oil analyzed. Blackstone is one, Oil Analyzers is another. I use Dyson Analysis. Terry has more than 35 years of independent oil analysis interpretation and consultation work. I also like that he sends a .wav file along with the .pdf file and explains each part of the analysis to you. No simple one paragraph interpretations.

I'm also a Terry Dyson customer. His service and insight is well worth the price of admission. You definitely get what you pay for. He will spot problems long before, you, a mechanic, or OBD will.

I agree. Our 2012 Cruze's UOA came back bad and turns out when I took it to the dealer they found that the intake tuning valve was bad and there was a crack in the PCV tube going to the intake. All covered under warranty.

it is all relevant to how you drive and your truck. I have 308 in my truck and do mostly all highway driving. my last oil change I had 12800 kilometers on the oil and the oil life was still at 38 percent

You must not have a 2014? My 2014 clicks off 1% for every 75 miles, no matter how its driven.

Been keeping a record since day one. 30 months and 30,800 miles worth. It don't matter the engine hours run, idleing time, speed, winter, summer, working, hauling, vacationing. It's all the same 1% for every 75 miles traveled in my truck, period!

Same here. Had a couple weeks of short trips (less than 5 miles each). Oil life monitor still dropped 1% per 1k miles.

??? 1% for every 1,000 miles???

That must be a typo?

It's a mathematical algorithm that takes engine speed, humidity levels, temperatures and average fuel economy (probably other stuff as well) to calculate XX% of oil life. It is not a mileage based counter.

Best way to compare oil filters is by weight. The heavier it is, the more pleats it has, and better quality it should be. Fram/Wix/Purolator is junk

What makes Wix filters junk? The Wix 57045 more specifically.

I don't know that specific number... maybe they do make a reasonable one... but I have seen allot of low end junk with wix written on it in the bargain parts stores

Believe what you want, I have documented it from day one on my 2014. 30 months and 30,800+ miles worth. It clicks off 1% for every 75 miles driven. No matter the driving conditions, time of year, engine speed, fuel mileage, humidity level, temperature, idle time, engine hours, or any other BS.

It don't care!

I don't use the OLM, I change oil on a mileage / time basis depending on what kind of driving I've done, for example, if there were considerable short trips and not getting up to operating temp then I will change it more often.

Instead of spending $28 or so on an oil analysis, why not just invest that in an oil change?

So what oil filter brands aren't junk to you?

The Fram's sold at Walmart are junk, but Fram does make some decent filters. Their Ultra Guard's are supposed to be very good. Wix filters are a good basic filter. They're not some fancy overpriced $15 filter but they have a good time-tested design and build quality. I haven't seen a Wix tear apart like a Purolator or Fram Extra Guard. Hell, even Amsoil offers Wix filters on their website.
