Trailer hitch recall for 14/15's with Z82

So they cannot even get the hitch welded right? I should have known, it is probably made in China. Nobody in the USA could possibly weld one together. We as a nation have absolutely lost all our skills.

 

I wonder what kind of nondestructive examination they do on the hitch critical welds. Probably none.

More like it was probably made in the US, thus the issue.

Must be real hard to screw up welding two pieces of iron together. Someone probably set the specs wrong on the robot that does the welding.

 

Looks like I will be getting a new hitch, or maybe GM will supply some JB weld to make the repair.

Anybody know if they follow AWS D1.1. welding standard? Or at least some equivalent welding standard (assuming this thing is not made in the USA)? What is the design safety factor on yield on the assembly? I hope it is at least 2:1. Do they do a proof test on each hitch to some percentage over rated load, such as 125% of the rated load to test the quality of the welds?

Me too. That's why I asked for Silver Sled's source. I can't find this one, but I did find a bunch of trailer hitch recall articles for Jeep and some older GM 2500 and 3500 trucks.

As of now, it's just a bulletin. Bulletin# 15036. It states certain vehicles equipped with RPO Z82 may have been built with hitch platform that could develope cracks....

So that's your answer? You prooftest the hitch as an assembly. It is a critical part whose failure could cause a serious accident. As for individual welds, each weld must receive at least visual inspection per AWS D1.1 code.

OK, Well it's apparently an official recall now. I just checked a few of the truck from the guys I work with and just a couple have the recall. One 14 crew cab built in US and dbl cab 14. And it's recall 15036.

I use the inTune to just turn off AFM and it worked great. I liked the way my truck ran with the Range AFM Delete, so I just used the standard tune with AFM turned off via the inTune (no other changes to the stock tune).
