I need some troubleshooting help on an WAMS upgrade I did in March of this year. Let me be clear that this is not a WAMS issue, but a GM issue.

I have 2015 Silverado that I upgraded to the digital cluster and CarPlay/Android Auto HMI Radio. I had great service and everything has been working fine.

Yesterday, I got into the truck and the 8” screen was black. There was no logo flashing up as typical on the cluster or the screen. The radio is not playing and the cluster states Audio Off. None of the USB ports are live. I have pulled the RDO fuse (to reset HMI) and also tried disconnecting the battery for 10+ minutes. No change.

I am trying to determine my next troubleshooting steps. I am planning to reconnect the HMI connector (to make sure it is not loose). I also have my old HMI, but I am unsure if I should try it.

I am open to next steps/thoughts.

Thanks,

Chip

Start with swapping your old radio first that’s the MOST bus master then you can swap hmi if need be. It’s not too bad to troubleshoot if you have spare parts :)

Thanks, Chris. I will start with the radio  tonight since I do have all of my old parts.

Sounds like a plan. I don’t have records on me but if you got the car play parts from us they are still under warranty.

Did you have anything plugged into the USB similar thing happens to my boss. He has a iPod he left plugged in the dealer said that’s what burned out his. HMI or so they say but he has the same issues.
I also know these trucks have gremlins I drove to work one day with no sound blinkers nothing. Left work and it was back to normal. Another time went to a store I had no steering wheel controls or phone. Left the store it worked fine idk. I have the Denali cluster to but it’s def a gm thing.

Update:

I removed the CarPlay radio and hooked up my old radio. Hooked up the battery and everything came back to life.

Shutdown the truck and unhooked the battery. Replaced my old radio with the CarPlay radio. Hooked the battery back up and once again everything came back to life.

My assumption is that the MOST bus must have locked up and never got the power all of the way off the system for it to reset. Removing the device completely must have done the trick.

Chris, thanks for the suggestion and guidance. Definitely saved me a lot of trouble.

Jaychevy81, good suggestion. I didn’t have anything hooked up other than my phone for CarPlay. Maybe that freaked the bus out somehow. I appreciate the info. It may have had something to do with it.

I have reached out to WAMS with a few questions on making the cluster swap for my 2018 Silverado. I plan to trade-in the truck in 3 years or so, and it will be paid off. Do you guys think that when I go to trade it in then, that the dealer will give me a problem since I've made several different little mods to the truck?

I forgot to ask, on the infotainment center, does it show the GMC or Chevy logo?

I cracked the very thin clear cover to the cluster on my 2017 so I bought a used Cluster with the exact Part number and took it to get re-programed at the dealer but they are having issues programing it ,  I thought it would be a quick deal in / Out  but they kept the truck over night waiting to hear back from a "Sensay Guru" programmer out of another dealership somewhere else. So I'm going to fix my cluster (plastic see through piece) and see if I cant  Recoup some monies back by selling it.

Holy cow there is a ton of information on here. (And a lot of people wanting to sell lol).

Not sure if this is the right place to post.. But here it goes.

-2015 PPV Tahoe  I checked the sticker in the glove compartment and it has the VV4 option on it so I'm assuming its the 2015.5?

-I currently have the stock I03 radio which can't do anything in the process of finding a replacement on Radio from CrutchField and wondering what are the chances that the radio will show up on the Denali Cluster or if only the stock one will do that... Hoping to spend closer to 500 than 1200.

*I know I don't own a truck but there is a lot more info on this site!

*Yes I read through all 81 Pages. Confused if I'm supposed to email GTPprix on the weekend or weekday or whenever lol but figured I would ask here first. Maybe @cmatt knows something since hes a Tahoe Wiring guru

I have all the parts for a 2014/15 apple car play/andriod auto and Denali cluster upgrade.  I recently totaled out my 14 GMC Sierra SLE that I had previously upgraded (thanks to this webpage).  I took out all the upgraded parts and replaced them with my stock parts.  If anyone is interested in completing the full upgrade/swap please let me know.  Of course, like we've all read, the parts will have to get programmed to your VIN.  Thanks!

Just did the same a few weeks ago for my 2017. Easy upgrade.

    • So I'm in the middle of a DOD AFM delete on my 6.2 L86 Sierra. I had a pick holding the tensioner but after I got the Cam phaser gear off I was cleaning off all the rtv and apparently I didn't have the pick seated far enough in. I bumped it and the tensioner sprang forward.  I think everything is good but I want a second opinion. The top of the tensioner is just a looped piece of plastic that rides in that channel right? There is no spring or anything is there? I got the gear and chain back on and it seems tight and everything looks right. I'm hoping nothing fell out.
    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
