Yes we know (we should) that the manual calls for 0W-20 for the 5.3 engine.

Can't remember the 6.2 oil spec off the top of my head, but oh well.

 

I'm curious what you 5.3 guys are running. Or plan to.

If you did steer of the recommended path, any issues?

GM recommends 0-W20. but eversince I got my truck I was having lifter noise and well it had a new oil change when I got it and endure this click-click for 3000 miles, then when it came time to change

Dealership will use synthetic blend mine used Quaker State........overfilled it by 3/4 quart and said, "I don't think it really matters if it's 8.00 or 8.75? So yeah, avoid the free oil change somehow

Quaker State UD Full Synthetic 0W20 or 5W20 in every car on the lot. Will also use Mobil 1 5W20 and Redline 5W30. All of these oils changed between 5 and 7 K have provided 200K plus trouble free miles

I went to autozone, or advanced auto to buy oil...... this 0w-20 was like 36 bucks for a 5 quart jug... Of course the v8 needs 8 quarts...

The bill with filter came to like 96 bucks...

 

Here's my advice - go onto amazon and buy the Oil of choice you need.... I got 2 jugs of Valvoline Advanced Synthetic SAE 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 5 Quart

and the bill was $48.00

Mobil 1 0W/20 can be had at WalMart - or I always watch for the oil + filter specials at AutoZone - just picked up the same oil for the 2015 Subaru Outback yesterday. $33.99 for the 5qt jug and M1 filter............

 

Oil is oil............ But when it comes to these thin 0W/20 fuel saving oils........... Mobil 1 helps me sleep at night....... :driving:

Already asked the dealership if they use the "synthetic blend" or "full synthetic" Dexos1 and they said full synthetic.......... Because I have free oil changes for life on the Silverado 6.2L on order. But doubt I will want to have them do what I can do just as easy and not have it on the crowded lot and in the hands of others.......... We'll see...........

So because 1 person had a small issue at 1 dealer they all will? Not really a F-up just an oversight, but hey I guess preach it to everyone...

So you are or aren't going to use the free oil changes?

 

Not sure why anyone would not, chances are they know more and are better at it than anyone here and if something does happen, it is documented and will get fixed (which is few and far between). On top of that it is free, money you don't have to spend! If people are overbearing just check the oil level when done, spot check the filter and plug and verify what oil they used. Not that difficult and you stay clean.

 

I have my last free oil change coming up. I am all for doing it myself (and I will) but i will miss not having to spend $50 each time and the time saved.

 

In response to the OP, what ever the dealer uses. When i do it myself I will use the cheapest big name oil in the correct weight and most likely synthetic blend unless it calls for full synthetic as I change my oil every 5k and am not worried about the extra longevity. Will do some more checking as that time nears.

First oil change at 1000 miles was done with the oil and filter I bought from the dealer the day I picked up the truck: AC Delco 0w-20 with filter.

 

The AC Delco is Synthetic BLEND, not FULL sythetic, which was fine for break-in anyway. At my next oil change, at 5k, I'll be switching to full sythetic, most likely. After that, I'll be sticking with a 5k mile OCI.

 

When I picked up the oil and filter from the dealer, the bill was $46 for 9 quarts and a filter. Yes 9, because apparently GM changed the oil capacity from 8.5 quarts to an even 8 recently and the guy who got the oil obviously wasn't aware.

0w-20 Mobil 1 full synthetic every 5000 miles in my truck and my wives 2016 Tahoe. Factory used in all corvettes for years now. 6.2 specs are the same as the 5.3 for viscosity.

      With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece.

      are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.

      Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆

      I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.

      In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them.
