2007 Silverado Fishtailed in Dry Conditions

Recommended Posts

Guys,

A few days ago I was trying to make a left turn and my truck fishtailed/skidded even though the road was completely dry. I will admit this truck has fishtailed upon acceleration from a complete stop when the roads are wet but this latest incident caught me completely off-guard. I was able to keep the truck on the road so there was no damage to vehicle but I wanted to know what underlying issue could be causing this problem. Could this be a sway bar issue or maybe something with the links (which the service dept recommended I get a few months ago).

I was in a T-Bird one time and had that happen. He was towing a boat and posi-traction engaged which is what caused it.

I might check the rear end. You could have it locking prematurely.

Too much throttle, or too little traction. Are your tires bald? Was there dirt/gravel/ anything else on the road? When driving an empty truck, you can break the rear tires loose very easily. Sometimes you just have to let off the gas a little bit. I shouldn't have to tell you that.

Did it actually swing to the side or did you just hear a squeal?

Both.

Could have been too much throttle. My tires aren't bald and I didn't notice any dirt or gravel on the road.

From what I understand, the rear diff on the Silverado is a limited slip unit. If they need maintenance or if the fluid was recently changed and the tech didn't use the right amount of friction modifier they might lock when cornering which would cause the sensation you're describing. Might be worth pulling the cover off and changing the fluids/inspection.

Where ever you fishtailed the road could have a lot of oil on it. Or if it was on black top that could be another reason because it can get really slick even though it's not wet

You must be driving a truck that is 2008 or older and have a 6.0 liter and lead foot and/or a good tune. Starting with 2009, the Stabilitrak and traction control/torque management nannies won't let you do a burn out or fishtail or donut in a 5.3L unless you push some buttons or pull some fuses first and find some wet pavement.

Tires could be new and have either too much air pressure or be a hard compound that sucks.
