Typical Battery Life on K2's?

Mine made it 6 months and a whopping 1500 or so miles. Guy at autozone told me I had junkyard marks on the battery. It had a dead cell apparently. Bought the truck new with 10 miles on the clock. Kinda sucked, but now I know the battery is good.

I would not put a whole lot of trust in a guy that works at Autozone. Could he know what he is actually talking about; sure. Does he actually know what he is talking; probably not. I think GM cuts corners but I don't think that they put in used batteries in our trucks.

My Sierra was built in August 2013 and purchased in October 2013. Still on original battery with 99,200 miles.

2.5 to 3 years is about all we get out of them on any modern vehicle now a days. Too much draw and re-charging going on with all the electronic crap on vehicles now a days as well as stuff we plug in. Add to that more Environmental restrictions which I am sure plays a part in battery life. Just seems like you can't make em as good as or better than they used to be.

My wife sold her 09 Toyota Camry this past winter. That was nearly 8 years old. The battery had started acting up last fall and I realized that it was still the original battery (she had the car before we met). Made it 100,000 miles. The car spent its life in MN and WI, but always garage parked.

granted, the 09 Camry had a lot less electronics than these new trucks do.

My wife sold her 09 Toyota Camry this past winter. That was nearly 8 years old. The battery had started acting up last fall and I realized that it was still the original battery (she had the car before we met). Made it 100,000 miles. The car spent its life in MN and WI, but always garage parked.

granted, the 09 Camry had a lot less electronics than these new trucks do.

I remember living up in those areas.....Started to think maybe it's time for a new battery at 5yrs? Now, I am thinking it's 16 months getting ready for another one.....oh.Brother! Even the AGM get killed out here in no time? It will just be Costco for me after the Free replacement

I agree 100%. I seriously doubt GM put a used battery, or that the dealer would do so. The battery did have paint pen marks on it when i pulled it out of the truck. Sorta odd. It definitely died fairly quickly. Guess I got the last one made on a Friday afternoon. Oh well, not too worried about it. I have whatever fancy named top-o-the-line battery Autozone sells now. All is well again

Wow. Ok. I was thinking Johnson, Optima, Panasonic. Never considered Delphi.

Who knew? If I move to China, I'll have TONS of choices! Ha.

I did ask.

I guess my point was Sears, Walmart, Autozone, et al, buy and re-label Johnson Controls or whomever.

I would have never guessed there were that many makers either. But it makes sense. I think even Johnson is sourcing or producing their own batteries off-shore, according to some threads I read about the Optima batteries.

The best thing you can do for the health of your battery is to buy a high quality charger and put it on it every once in a while. Keep the battery charged will make it last longer.

Batteries can fail without warning, I change my batteries every 4 years, after that they're just living on borrowed time. If you decide to stretch it out make sure you carry a set of jumper cables.

I have done this for years.

IMO and posting this again.

A battery is a throw away item and I buy according to price middle of the road. One of the best places to buy is Costco, they extend the warranty.

Also I never understood why people let a battery die and then replace it. While it's dying you work your alternator hard trying to keep it charged. Getting stranded or having to replace a battery in the cold doesn't work for me. I avoid jump starting also which is good IMO with all the electronics in the newer vehicles.

I replace our batteries every 4 years. Never been stranded or replaced one in the cold.

It a toss up my wife's battery is in the trunk, 3 years in I started asking the dealer about it. Kept asking them to change it, they said it was to soon. Sure enough one day wouldn't start, at lease it was at home. Same dealer different car 18 months they said battery was testing weak, they changed it at no cost. It was starting the truck fine.

My mom had the factory battery in her Jeep Liberty for over 10 years. Wasn't bad when she replaced it, just went ahead and did it.

I had the same batteries in my 2004.5 Dodge for most of its 300k miles, just replaced them before I traded on this 2012. Those same batteries (2004 vintage) still hold charge, I use them to run pumps and lights on remote sites...they still work fine after 14 years?

But this thread has me second guessing leaving the battery in my 2012...both of then are 2012 vintage and over 110k miles of driving. Should I replace them...maybe next month since it's right about $300 for the pair from Deka.
