Wireless Charging Module

acc412

Question

I have a '16 Sierra with the wireless charging module. I now have an iPhone 8 Plus and it does not charge on the pad but it will charge on a 2018 model (the newer module with 3 coils). Any chances of having GM replace the wireless module with the newer one?

There is always a chance.  I would go to the dealer I purchased it from, and asking the service manager.  I have been buying all my new vehicles from the same salesman at the same dealer, partially for instances just like this.  If it is out of warranty, and the dealer is unwilling to work with you, your next option is to contact customer service at GM.  There used to be a user here from customer service at GM, not sure if they still monitor the site though.

A good argument to support this action are the prices of the modules:

2016-2017 module 23248791 List $252.78 Wholesale $161.38

2018 module 13521066 List $152.96 Wholesale $97.65

So... it is significantly cheaper for a much better operating part. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnnn.

I purchased on for about that at my local GM dealer. I have a wholesale account with them.

Or...one of the many online parts houses. They charge a healthy shipping charge though...

I posted this in another thread, but  thought it might be helpful here.  This is an outline of the various alternatives I have seen for wireless charging if you have 2017 or 2016 truck and an iPhone 8 or X:

  • Remove the small magnet from existing charger.  The two YouTube videos are here:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u29igTCTdLM&t=2s

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AZKlTDnqsU&t=2s

This approach worked for me,  but only if my phone was sitting on the charging mat when I started my truck.  If I removed the phone and placed it back on the mat, or placed it on the mat after starting the truck, it would not charge.

All of the remaining alternatives involve installing a 2018 charger (GM part number 13521066), although it appears the part is currently in short supply.  You can buy it on ebay here:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-WIRELESS-MODULE-13521066/253405415313?hash=item3b0023c791:g:zFYAAOSwlzRadMrn&vxp=mtr

The three alternatives for installation are:

  • Modify existing connector.  The YouTube video is here:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2lOzwlnbg0&t=64s  I didn’t try this approach because I’m not very handy with a knife and didn't want to cut my finger off, but some have reported success.
  • Install a new connector by repining it yourself.  I tried this approach, but found that the pin work required was too detailed for me, especially when attempted within the confines of a truck.  I’ve successfully worked on similar molex connectors in pinball machines, but the wires to the wireless charger are 22 awg, which is very small—I found it difficult to repin them neatly, even with a decent crimping tool
  •  Install a “plug and play” connector from Phil (pgamboa).  This is my recommended option.  Phil does great work and provides fantastic customer service.  One end of his harness plugs directly into the existing connector and the other plugs into the new 2018 module—no splicing or soldering of wires required.

I hope this post is helpful to someone.  I just wish GM had just implemented the latest Qi standard in the first place so we didn't have to go through all of this trouble!
