My dumb ass dealer solved nothing either.  I just ordered some sil glyde per your advice. Do you know what the bolts on the steering shaft need to be re torqued to, as I’m going to try to do this Sunday.  Ty for the help poolboy

You're welcome man.  As for the bolt torque, I couldn't find the setting anywhere so I just cranked it down good 'n tight.  Then one extra grunt.  It's not coming apart.

Well....all was going smoothly until I dropped one of those damn little nuts, and it took my like an hour to find the damn thing. Eventually back together and sounds good. My dealer sucks for service. DePaula Chevrolet will blow them out the door, but I’ve been sadly disappointed by my service experience with the.

How did you guys reach the third nut behind the brake booster?

I can’t seem to find a good way to get to it.

I used a flexible extension shaft on my impact driver, it was easy but I was able to feel it onto the nut  and get it off. To reinstall, I started it by hand then snugged it down same way I got it off.

Super long extensions on my ratchet.

Is this sound different than the fuel pump?  I hear what sounds like a sewing machine under acceleration under the drivers side floor.

Finally got this fixed on my truck. Fuel injectors. My truck threw a p050d code and misfire code. Turns out two injectors needed to be replaced. No more tick!

Did you have any check engine lights come on or just plugged in a code reader?

I had a check engine light. The tick cane back and seemed worse. I traded it in. Couldn’t deal with the tick any longer.

Story from hell here.  First off, I struggled to get the nut off the boot behind the brake booster.  Finally got it off.  Did the job, then went to put it all back together.  Got two of the nuts back on, but simply couldn't get the third one behind the booster.  I was losing daylight, so I decided to just hook up the steering shaft and finish tomorrow.  Nope.  Dropped the damn shaft bolt into the engine bay and it didn't drop through.  Spent 30 minutes looking for it to no avail.  Went to Napa and got another bolt.  Just to be safe I put some Locktite on it.  Hoping it wasn't some kind of special bolt.  I don't need the steering coming undone while I'm driving down the road!  After I got the shaft hooked back up I re-attempted the third nut on the boot.  Nope.  I dropped the damn nut.  I can't find it anywhere.  Anyone know what the part number might be?  Or should I just use a 10mm nut from the hardware store?  This project was nightmare!  Should have been so simple!!

Damn - my 7 had this issue and man was it annoying. Sounds like the exhaust manifold blew out around one of the cylinders that tsst tsst tsst tsst sound that got louder in 4 cyl mode. Not all the time but noticeably there alot of the time. First time i heard it i thought shit flat tire!

Wish i woulda seen this thread earlier as my 18 hasnt made the sound yet (maybe a tad but not anywhere near as bad as the 17)

Same exact thing happened to me. Took me an hour, but I found the ridiculous little nut. Annoying as hell.

Thanks to all for this information!  My 18 Sierra with the 6.2 started doing this last year and I chalked it off to direct injection tick.  Funny thing was that it would come and go, and I never heard it on the freeway, just taking off from a stop.  I did notice that my boot was slightly over the foil insulation.  This thread finally gave me the motivation to remove the boot, trim off some of the foil insulation and pack it with heavy duty synthetic grease.  Once I put it all back I did not hold my breath.  To my surprise - no more tick!  I can enjoy my truck again.  I mean if i really listen for it I can hear the direct injection tick, but nothing like before!

Same issue on 18 suburban premier.    Dealer lead mechanic thinks it is the instrument cluster panel and are replacing it under warranty tomorrow.      My 17 didn’t do this.   We shall see if it fixes it, less than optimistic.
