I suspect most all the trucks when they are 5 or 6 6 years old many electronic items will fail. At the 8 to 10 year mark most of it will not function anymore . It simply will cost more to repair all of it than the truck will be worth.

You mean more than it's value, right? Worth has nothing to do with monetary value.

Looking back on it now I wish I would've bought a RAM. I've spent over 17k on top of the 65k when I bought it on my Denali with the supercharger and lift kit and still regret buying it. I love the way it looks and now that the supercharger is installed I love the power. Other than that not much impresses me. Transmission sucks and there is no amount of money that can fix it and the interior sucks. Oh well, I digress. Hopefully I can wait until the RAM TRX comes out...

At least your GMC will go into gear with the good o'le column shifter.

Unfortunately, The RAM owner in the video above cannot say the same!  :smash:

It’s funny how all the people who never had an issue (like my father who owns one) never post about the positive experience. I bet there’s never been GMC who’s linkage broke. I don’t give my transmission another year. The way it slams and jerks into 2nd gear I feel like I will be stranded soon. This happens before the supercharger. The truck just now has 10k miles and feels like it’s worn out.

It is a shame anyone has to suffer mechanical misfortune with any vehicle.

The experience can be stressful not to mention wallet draining at times.

My Sierra is not perfect. Then again no vehicle I have ever owned new used or in between ever has been.

And I suspect there never will be a perfect vehicle.

Im pretty sure Motor Trend hates GM - they would have awarded this to the last gen Titan over the new Chevy.  But even so, Im not that surprised by this when you compare the two.  GMs biggest real advancement is a transmission with more gears and small diesel that plays catch up to the others.  I do think both the Chevy and GMC are hands down looks winners over the Ram externally.   They are beautiful.   Rams exterior is about as bland as you can get.  Their last gen was way better.   However the GM interior is uninspired with the same cheapo leather (mostly vinyl) used in the last gen..  Even discounting the 12" screen (which is just plain cool, even if you hate on it) the Ram interior is the hands down winner.  My own column shifter nostalgia isnt enough to change that opinion.  At least it is not on the center console wasting space like Ford and Toyota.   I think the biggest innovation from Ram beat that beat them is the addition of the mild hybrid.  That is actually pretty cool in that it adds 150 ft-lbs of torque on the low end to a gasser.

The Ram might not last as long, I dont know.  I think talking smack about it is like the pot calling the kettle black.  My GMC had a ton of issues for years.   It seems pretty solid now though.

Regardless of awards, I probably wont buy either for a couple years.  I dont think either did enough over the last generations to be worth upgrading.  But they are both darn nice in their own ways.

Gm has won truck of the year 3 times in last 8 years.  Yet MT is biased ?

I am glad they won the award and they fully deserved it. We should all be congratulating them. What Ram did in the Limited is the best thing that could have happened for ALL truck brand buyers. Ram raised the bar with comfort, technology and innovation....The other manufacturers will be forced to step up their game. The fact that RAM changed the game SHOULD be celebrated and they should win the MT award...Are they going to give it to GM when they played it safe and did very little to change the truck market?

What Ram did is a MUCH needed shove for GM considering what you get in a Denali/High Country for 70k....Im STILL searching for the value in the high end models. I have no problem paying that type of money for a truck if I can put my finger on the value. I wont pay 70k for the Denali lettering on the side of the truck to impress my neighbors, however.

Yes, Motor Trend really makes a point of rewarding change and innovation.  Even if it is not the best, most well rounded choice for every buyer, when a truck displays some innovation, it jumps up to the top of the MT pile.

Sorry but IMO.

They hype improvements, technology etc. Not the best vehicle. How can they with no history on said vehicle.

So if you agree that a new model or new technology is a thing to avoid then what's the point?

Motor Trend= mostly trash.

Now if you have to have the latest and greatest this will give you the info you seek.

:)

Again, didn't they pick the Honda Ridgeline last year! Or the Japanese El Camino as someone here calls it! haha.

MT does Not a lot of credibility IMO!

    • Fix one problem and find another.   Truck didn't have a thermostat in it so I flushed out the system today and refilled with 50/50 Dexcool. This truck is so old (LOL) that it has a sticker under the hood alerting people to the fact that it contains such. There is also an orange supplement with the owner's manual alerting the owner that "Your vehicle is one of a number of late production 1995 General Motors vehicles that use a newly developed engine coolant in the cooling system..."   I was still a little flummoxed by what seemed like a rich condition (exhaust smell, and a puff of carbon with a punchy rev). While watching the coolant temperature and testing the thermostat with my scanner, I happened to notice the IAT (incoming air temperature) to the intake was -40F. I know the temp is below average today, but I can still feel my face, and I was wearing shorts.   D'oh!! I realized I had never plugged the IAT back in, and the airbox was out while I was doing coolant. So I paused, reinstalled the airbox and plugged in the IAT, and viola. Things cleared right up, and I watched the coolant temp climb to a reported 198 degrees on the scanner (195 thermostat) and then it dropped to 194 (open) and then back up to 198 and held. Let it cool, came back, checked the coolant level and was satisifed.   Victory lap?   It needed more than the couple of gallons of gas I put in it from almost bone dry, so I ran it up to the gas station. It had earned it, or, at least I was pretty certain I wouldn't be draining or removing the tank anytime soon.   CEL popped on just as I was cruising a nice steady 40mph, just after coasting down a slight downhill curve.. Of course, it did, because, why let me enjoy not having dash emojis for a little while.   I just happened to have the scanner plugged in. I don't text and drive but I might scan and drive. Don't tell the police.   P0401, EGR flow insufficient.    Well, hello, EGR... ...my old friend! Welcome to the party, now that the engine reaches the factory-programmed operating temperature. I'm sure it was gagging on hostile, rich exhaust and carbon this whole time so I'll take it off and look again.   At least it's easily accessible, and worst case, about $65 to replace.   To keep, or to sell... Hmm. I want it running correctly either way. It's easier to sell when there are no fault codes.   It needs tires (they're aged out and cracking)   It could probably use an oil pan seal, or maybe the timing cover gasket/ junction with the pan needs redone because I've got an issue there that leaves a drop of oil on the floor.   If I do tires I'm sure they'll say the ball joints could use freshening, and, and, and, and.... At some point I'll have to stop. I can't (shouldn't) make it perfect, that's not what this rig is.
    • Take it back. That's about all you can do.  Mark
    • Gloss black would look better, but I'd paint match the grill before ditching the chrome bumpers.
    • Mine has done that since new. The colder the worse.
    • Yeah, that's my understanding. The newer trucks are 433Mhz vs the older 315Mhz TPMS. Putting these wheels on is costing me a small fortune, but so far, I'm still OK with it.    Next week the chrome bumpers are scheduled to be replaced with flat black ones. That would complete what the dealer still owes me.
