The new C8 Corvette uses the same ECM and the aftermarket will have it unlocked within weeks of launch. It was only on the ZR1 for the C7 generation, so there was little incentive to crack it for the dozen guys who would want a custom tune.  Now that it is on the Corvette, trucks, and Blazer, it will get a lot more eyes and keyboards on it.  

 

I'm not too worried. Just a waiting game. This guy wants a big cam and eventually a blower.

That is an interesting thought. I would have to disagree since the 19 ZR1 and 19 DFM trucks do not use Global B architecture and the 20 C8 and some new Cadillacs are debuting that which is a major change in hardware and electrical systems.

They will eventually get there but it will take time and be expensive. The C8 will not be “unlocked” within weeks of launch but I do like your optimism.

HP Tuners now has a modified ECU to purchase that will allow for tuning, but at $1,400 I’m not sure how many takers they will have. Unless you are going forced induction or cams, I don’t see how you could justify that price to pick up 10-15 hp. https://www.hptuners.com/product/e90-modified-ecm-purchase-ecm-exchange-service/


$1400 to unlock the ECM you send in from your truck.

Then $500 in credits to license it.

So $1900 if you know how to tune it yourself and have an mpvi2. If you don’t then expect to spend closer to $3000.

Jet Performance 21410 Jet Power Control Module Stage. Amazon says it will work, I even contacted JET and they said it will work, I even made sure to distinguish between 8sp and 6sp trans. Said works with 8sp trans vehicles with 5.3L ecotec3, bit dosent change tranny info. Summit racing says it will work with the 2019 Silverado LT Trail Boss. I don't know tho. Kinda hard to believe this will be plug and play and noone else can't brake GM's code.

I find that very hard to believe, plus you couldn't pay me to run their stuff.

Diablew has something in the works. No telling what the final cost will be though.

What about inline tuners?  Like a Power Commander that bikes use, but for trucks?  Box that intercepts the signal from the ECM to the injectors, same with the coils...  Takes whatever the stock signal is, and changes the pulse to the injectors to add or remove fuel...  It is transparent to the ECU so long as it also interrupts the lambda sensor...

ECU tuning us usually preferable, but when ECM's can't be tampered with, having an inline tuner and tossing the vehicle on the dyno and just mapping the entire rev range at each throttle input...

Is there such an option?

I think this a definite possibility. Because in the past the ecu could be cracked fairly easy the need was not there for gm gas vehicles. But now because it is much more complex I think we will see piggy back types of tuning devices.

In some ways, piggy back systems are better in that they don't touch the ECU and so diagnostically there isn't anything written that would show up as "tampered with" on a dealer scan...

now, you might want to remove it prior to a trip to the dealer, but I have never had a motorcycle dealer give me a hard time with having one installed.  Now, if my tune did something, like I ran it so lean or I stupidly gave it 40 degrees of ignition advance and blew up the motor, yeah, I would see that claim denied...

Dodge went over a decade with no one able to break their programming coding on their ECM's. I dont know why people think GM or any other manufacture cant keep people out. If they really wanted to make it unbreakable GM would do it. The only reason GM allows people into their ECM/TCM is because of the racing teams who need access to the systems. I am sure people will get into the systems, but it might be with the help of GM and or some sort of license fee that GM will charge those tuners for the info they need to be able to get passed the encryption protocol.

You can thank the EPA and the outcome from the Bullydog diesel tuning that was resolved last year. The EPA forced some of this issue along with the Corp Atty types who are worried someone will hack into and take control over a vehicle while it is driving since dang near every system on the vehicle is electronically controlled now. With the steering, ECM and TCM being electronically controlled and on the CANBUS system the fear is a hacker could hack into the system thru the Onstar data link and take control over the vehicle. If that did happen the occupants would be held hostage and at the mercy of the hackers.

Racing teams even at the lowest level are not using the factory ECM. They are all on Motec systems.

GM just increased security due to over the air hacking potential and increased emissions scrutiny.

These decisions are not driven in any way by the aftermarket.

HP Tuners is offering unlocked ECM or you can send yours in. It’s already broke but no tunes have been written yet.
