Guess my fuel economy

thanks to everyone that provided substantive input.  sounds like i should keep my 2500HD, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze if i am only going to get 2 or 3 more mpg.

for those who criticized the thread, may god have mercy on your pathetic souls.

I’d happily give up 3-5mpg any day of the week for the bulletproof reliability of a 6.0L as opposed to a questionable 5.3L if I was only running one truck. Only reason my 015 is a 1/2 ton is it was a replacement for a Tahoe as there is no way I will pay what they want for newer ones and I already had/have a HD 6.0 for towing/hauling/plowing/work/farm ect and couldn’t justify (to myself) a need for 2 HDs. Most people just don’t get that the beauty of the 6.0 is the pure simpleness of it. Does it have the most H.P./torque NOPE, does it get 20+mpg NOPE, does it spend less time in the shop than the other 4 engines offered in the K2s YEP... IMO you already got the best combo

BTW the medium pepperoni at Dominos is... well IDK Dominos sucks there’s better choices out there!

I lost 2-3mpg going to 33"x12" R20 E-loads on my 6.2L. I would expect a 3-4mpg loss for the 5.3L depending on FD ratio. If you can find an NHT 5.3L with the 3.42 it will handle the new rubber a bit better. I was around 18, I get 15mpg or worse now. The stock tires are literally Trojan condoms and weigh about 3lbs, the reason is fleet mileage. Even a D-load AT tire in the stock size you will lost at least 1mpg.

Depends on trans and gear but best of 15ish on highway driving nice.

That said get it tuned and get 20mpg if that is your concern or desire.

As I have said my 600hp 5.3l 6speed 2wd crew cab gets 19.7mpg on highway. I could build a mpg tune and do better but not what I want.

Well it sounds pretty simple - keep my 2500HD.  The gains in mpg going to a 1500 are probably not going to be worth all the effort to swap over the canopy and the rear slider, change out the tires, etc.   If we were talking 7 mpg it would be something to think about, but for 2-3 mpg it just doesn't make sense.

I do love my current truck, I'm just a tightwad, fwiw.

DANG.  I'm out of the office, so I don't have my executive dartboard handy.  So I'll guess somewhere between 0 and 100.  I'll leave the units (US miles per gallon, metric liters per kilometer, years per banana peel and 1/2 beer in the Mr Fusion, light years per dilithium crystal, etc.) up to you.

(This is such a stupid hypothetical post- read the MPG thread)

“They’ve done studies, you know. 60 percent of the time, it works every time.”

I had a 6.0L 2000 3/4 ton before getting my '18 1/2 ton 5.3L NHT.  The 6.0L got 12mpg no matter what I did.  Highway 12. City 12. Towing my race car loaded with gear in the bed, 12.  I now get around 19-21 hwy, 16-17 city and about 14-15 towing.  All around better than the old 3/4 ton and rides so much nicer.  If I were to get another 3/4 ton it would be diesel but that wasnt in the budget when I was shopping for a new truck.  This also doubles as my DD and I have heard a diesel doesnt make the best DD.

See those kind of numbers make me think it is seriously worth considering making a change.  If I am going to save over 1k per year on gas, that's something I have to think about.

There have been lots of informative posts in this thread and I am appreciative to everyone that has given it their best shot to provide an honest answer.

My CCLB 2500 gets 12mpg with lots of idle time, winter driving, bush roads, 600lbs payload at all times. My 2015 6.2L gets 15mpg with no idle time, no winter driving, no payload, but 33" Eloads, but I drive it around like it is a Corvette. I would expect with a short bed 2500 you could get around the 15mpg mark under daily driving, especially if its a DCSB. So you can have a rocketship half ton, or a very capable slug but you cant have both, unless you go L5P Duramax but no one wants EPA friendly diesels unless they own a diesel repair shop.

I can give you real world, brass tacks numbers on my 2014 CCSB 5.3L running 3.08's with a Leer topper.  The attached image is every drop of fuel that was added to that truck from the day I bought it in September of 2014 until the day I traded it in last September.  Over the life of the truck it averaged 15.1MPG

Of note,

1. Shortly after purchasing the truck we moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois.  I came first and the wife stayed back to sell the house.  I worked 4-10's through the week then spent my weekends making as many trips as humanly possible back and forth pulling the largest U-Haul pull behind the entire time.  I put 10,000 miles on my truck in the month of November 2014.

2 and 3. We bought a pontoon boat.  3500 lb dry weight including the trailer but stood about 6' taller than the truck and absolutely destroyed the fuel economy, especially if it was the slightest bit windy. (Think 9-10MPG on a good day, 6-7 on a bad one)  The lake we boat on is about an hour and 15 from the house one way.

I am not afraid to drive my trucks.  If I had to say, that's probably 70-80% daily city driving with the occasional trip to Florida or Pennsylvania thrown in.

*EDIT* If you look closely, the light grey line above the white line is what the DIC reported MPG was for each tank.  ALWAYS off by 1-1.5MPG

Lose the E rated big tires and back off the hammer to 75 or lower and it might be worth it. Otherwise, likely not worth it. You certainly won't save enough on fuel to make up the price difference. Not really concerned about the topper, a tonneau cover can actually improve mileage over an open bed, so I can't imagine a topper will hurt you that much. It's the heavy, aggressive tires and high speed that will kill you. It costs money to go fast. On my truck, with factory P rated 32" tires, you take a big hit increasing cruising speed from 70 to 80.
