My entire cab actually filled with some smoke, so not sure if any damage was done. I am in Alberta Canada. My truck has 26,000 kms. Just had an oil change done 1500kms ago, all services done by gm. Guessing its the cooler hose as well, we will see come Monday. I will be pushing for further tests to be done in the future if they just replace the hose and oil. 

I noticed their is a recall for certain trucks with this issue. Just curious if yours is one of the trucks with the recall.

Sitting side the road as we speak 10k miles on my 2019 oil every where assuming this crimp hose that should have been fixed before it was sold to me if they knew there has been issue not happy camper at all

Just happened today (3-12-20) to my 2019 TB LT with 47,000 miles on it, unbelievable.  Engine was knocking when I got it stopped.  I will see what the dealer has to say in the next day or so.

Just happened to me tonight with 17k miles, towed to dealer. Gm won't be in until Saturday.. along with this issue. My truck also exhibits the hard shift from reverse to drive and 2-1 downshift is extremly hard intermittently. Drivers side cab and bed alignment is way off. Not very happy with gm quality. Hopefully I can get gm to buy this pos back. It has been in the shop 7 times now since buying it in November. Leaving me stranded on the side of the road twice now.

Karrs42901 and Redslt,  did your trucks have this particular recall out for them? 
 I’m just wondering if even the trucks that don’t show this recall are also having this failure.

Ad80 I just checked no open recal on my truck for this issue. In the pic posted you can see the oil slick that dumped out of my truck on the freeway going 80mph I was in the fast lane and as you can see I had to move over to the other side of the road rather abruptly.  Luckily there wasn't high traffic.  Would have hated to see what would have happened if I wasn't able to get over as quickly. Engine could have seized and I could have been stuck in a travel lane with no way to get it off the road. Good thing it happened when I was driving and not my wife.

You might want to get an oil analysis done after they fix it because no doubt they will say no damage done and install the cooler lines and judging by how gm has been operating these last couple years charge you a 80 bucks for an oil change. How far back does that trail go, with how high pressure these systems are it doesn't take long to run it pretty dry imo.

Waiting on the dealership to call.  I had it dropped off and I took the keys with me. I want to get under the truck with them,  i want to see which line broke, how much oil is left in the pan, and i want too see if they try to start it to get it in the shop or if they are going to wheel dolly it in there. Pretty sure there is going to be engine damage. When trying to get the truck on the tow truck ther driver couldn't find a way to put it in neutral without trying to start it..  it didn't sound healthy...

Yes, could have been a lot worse. glad your ok.  Since there is no recall for your truck, and it still happened, then i guess it could happen to all trucks. I wonder if the dealers will still fix this, weather we have a recall out or not.

Not that it helps you now, but you hold down the start button without your foot on the brake for 15 or 20 seconds. All functionality other than the engine running.

 

Ask me how I know.....

 

Had lots of time to read the owners manual while waiting for a tow truck for the very same failure last April.

This just happened to me right now. Just had it towed to dealer. Wtf! This is a crying shame man. No way this should happen and there's no recall for this? I'm also worried my engine was damaged even if I only went 100 meters before I stop the motor.

GM will do everything they can to get out of having to do a recall, where as some other manufacturers are up front and honest and will recall the silliest things.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
